The game pauses when you open the map. The map also shows you exactly where the next level is so ideally what you want to do is plan the quickest route to the next level, picking up chests if you can along the way. Also keep in mind, if you switch floors the timer will pause, going forward or back a level always pauses the timer. I'm hoping that this changes because you really have to abuse that mechanic starting out if you want to make any kind of meaningful progression and it makes hiding redundant when it doesn't even pause the timer. The timer should only ever count down when you're seen and being actively chased by an enemy.I feel like this would actually be great if so much wasnt stacked against you. A timer to an unbeatable monster, monsters are damage sponges, AND durability to items. Unless you get insanely lucky things just get worse and worse as you spend more time in it, as opposed to better as you move forward and find more stuff. This is super early in development, though so hopefully things will get eased up on a bit.
There's a fallback if you hit rock bottom i.e. no money/weapons, if you talk to the shop chick she'll give you a free shiv with weak damage but high durability, with it you can at least kill the eye-mouth-zombie chicks by stun locking them to scrounge up some money.
