Devs nowadays often forget the main purpose of these games: the player having fun. Not about save-scumming, not about restarting/replaying content because of making a wrong choice in some remarkably stupid list of options, not about ending up where you didnt intend to end up only to rage-quit the game in frustration, etc. etc..... just about HAVING FUN. Or at least that's how it should be imho.
Lain's mods bring exactly that. And much more, like restoring content that has been censored because of BS, adding an option to view all alternative scenes in an event instead of just a few, even editing some scenes/scripts -- all in favor of player having more control over what's happening and subsequently - having more fun
