So a few weeks ago I wanted to try DAZ 5 or whatever the version that they're working on right is and I when I tried to download it from my account, I saw that all they had was a download for DIM (DAZ Install manager) and not an exe like before. Either I missed something and there is an exe (I mean there was a beta but it was "inactive") or they're g oing for this "alwayas online, you need to be logged in to install the app". In which case I guess either we're gonna have to use cracked versions or just abandon the hobby.

Well, yeah, you missed something, and this something is that the DIM have been the way to get anything related to DAZ, including DAZ Studio itself, since a really long time.
You also missed that the DIM is, as its name say, just the Install Manager, and therefore only needed when you need to install something. As well as the fact that (at least for the version I get that isn't the last one) it have a check box that permit to works offline, and can be configured to not install whatever you downloaded right after you downloaded it.

Not true. As you can see DAZ 4.24 is available in the product library and can be donwloaded and saved on your PC for reinstalling whenever you want (and that way you could also download previous versions and save them if you ever needed them). So can any product bought (at least for now). I like to download them manually because I also install them manually so I can keep track of which files get installed where. But for DAZ 6 the option to download it manually, without installing the DAZ Manager first does not exist.

"[...] the DIM have been the way to get anything related to DAZ [...]".
Notice the absence of the word "only"...

I like to download them manually because I also install them manually so I can keep track of which files get installed where.
And as I said, normally there's the option to not install them automatically once downloaded.

You mean DAZ Studio 6.25.2025 ALPHA?

You don't have to log in while using Daz Studio (I only do it when syncing stuff for smart content or registering a new plugin). You only run DIM when installing or updating products from Daz. Been this way for a decade plus.

First of all, Daz 6 is officially DAZ 2025 ALPHA (like anne O'nymous already mentioned) and it will appear in your DIM (if you're logged in) - Mines been waiting there since April, for me to try it.

DIM_Screen.jpg

Second of all... DIM is usually downloaded directly from your DAZ account. In fact, I saw the link for it there just a few days ago when I was on the DAZ website trying to troubleshoot a database issue I was having. It was on the page that shows any bought assets you have (The order page I think) And for as long as I have used DIM, it was always able to be run Offline. I usually just dump the IM000xxxxx.zip files directly into the DIM download folder to install them offline.

But you do need to log in to download any purchased assets and also for some few other scenarios. Like, for example, my DB issue the other day. I couldn't re-import the metadata for the ~1000+ assets I have until I logged in. I logged in, the DB updated in 20 seconds or so, then I logged out again. DAZ doesn't care if half my shit is pirated. They know the vast majority of users are doing that. I pirate basically everything at first, to try it, and then if I decide to use it in one of my paid projects, I buy it.

And it will probably not be name Daz Studio 6.

Daz is an US company and the version number (6.25.2025) is clearly a date in US format. Using date as version is relatively common when it come to pure alpha, what Daz 2025 currently is. Even the "Daz 2025" will probably not stay, being just the code name during the development.
All this permit to release the first production version with a x.0 version number, even if the development lasted for years and had hundreds revisions.
