A reverse isekai visual novel with a decent storyline and a few areas in need of improvement. It provides a good enough playthrough but falls short of standing out from a sea of AVNs with similar themes.
Story
MC got reverse isekaied from an alternate feudal Japan universe where sorcery is the norm to the current modern world after being ambushed by sinister forces in his home world. He then joins a mysterious organization that deals with magical and paranormal issues while staying with a bevy of girls. The main plot hasn't fully surfaced as at Chapter 4, so it's hard to tell where the story will eventually head currently.
The narrative is interesting enough to follow up, but at the same time it's also apparent that the developer has certain shortcomings when it comes to storytelling and pacing. For a start, the game doesn't handle dramatic and highly emotional moments well. MC's sudden realization of having isekaied, finally meeting up with Uru, learning the deaths of his home world wives etc. ended up rather stale and uneventful despite the opportunity to stir up powerful emotions with players.
Another aspect that needs a relook is the tendency to introduce multiple perspectives in an unfettered and directionless manner. Paradox interjects its narrative with multiple perspectives from a myriad of characters that are sometimes not only meaningless but disruptive to the overall flow.
For e.g. Sky's perspective is not only redundant, but also dampens any surprise that players could have felt role playing as the MC. Ditto some of the scenes from Audrey's and Mae's POV, all they do is unveil critical plot points over early and by the time their ripple effects hit MC, players are unperturbed having been "warned" much earlier.
There are also numerous micro perspective switches to LIs as they carry out ordinary activities and indulge in general banter, these slow down the story pacing unnecessarily and don't do much in character development either.
Game Mechanic
Kinetic novel with some choices that allow players to reject a particular LI.
Background / Character Renders
Background and characters are made with HS2 to good effect. Paradox features the occasional panorama zoom out and camera panning non-sexual scene which is a welcome feature that builds up the immersion. Generally most of the LIs are well designed with characters like Jill, Tina, Audrey and Pyra fitting into their roles.
However, the way the renders are presented during action and fight scenes leave much to be desired. Instead of using a combination of text, sound effects and abrupt change in scene to highlight high impact sequences, the game tries to present them by doing a collage of pics depicting a fast action sequence. The problem is these renders change slowly resulting in a comical stock motion of a guy slowmo leaping towards the enemy and casting magic. Not ideal.
Character Development
It's above average for an adult game - the MC and LIs are more than two dimensional and there is quite a bit of effort made to breathe life into them.
However as previously mentioned, many of the emotionally raw scenes are too short and bland to do justice to the characters. Other than that, Tina's characterization as a playful nymph, Uru as a loyal companion and Audrey as the pragmatic leader is well crafted, hopefully others will be filled up in later chapters.
Sex Scenes
Most of the scenes as of Chapter 4 are focused on Tina and they are very well done - some pretty unique camera angles and animations which combined with Tina's playful and teasing nature makes for a sexy experience.
However, those with minor characters are rather unoriginal HS2 stock and some of them even have animations that need rework e.g. Celestia's pounding in the bathroom is weirdly angled and Jill's doggy is too stiff and unnatural.
All in I would say the lewd scenes are a mixed bag ranging from very good to ordinary to bad, hopefully the developer can maintain standards like Tina's for the rest of the characters in the future.
BGM and Sound Effects
The BGMs are mostly complimentary though I wish they can be applied more consistently throughout game play - right now it's around 50% background white noise and 50% BGMs which makes the playing experience somewhat choppy as sound levels alternate all the time. SFX is minimal but good enough.
Conclusion
Paradox has a good story to keep players going, but the pacing needs to be better controlled and alternate perspectives need to be used judiciously for a specific purpose less they turn disruptive. The sex scenes could do with more quality control, but the good ones with Tina are worth the wait. An all-in high 3s to 4.0 star experience for me.
