Spell Checking and Grammar Editing Help?

In Ren'Py games, are the scripts/text portions encrypted, or in plain text? Are there any mods/patches that go through some of these otherwise fine games and correct the spelling/basic grammar? Would such mods/patches be useful? Or do editors offer the developers their services to give their text a once-over?

I don't want to complain too much about it, especially since a lot of these games are free, and a lot of developers do not have English as their primary language and are just trying their best, but some of these games would really be improved with even minor editing.

Ren'Py packs assets into archives as part of its release export process. They can be unpacked with a utility, I think it's called unren if I recall. At which point you can see and edit the individual scripts. Should be a tutorial in the Tools sub-forum I think.
