Steam deck compatibility

I tried to search this question before posting so if there's already a thread about this I apologize. I'm considering buying a steam deck or an x box ally to game on and making my computer more work oriented, I'm definitely leaning more towards steam deck though for ergonomics (I don't like the right stick location on ally) and most of my games are from steam. From what I understand, the ally would have no trouble at all running games from this site but what about the steam deck? I know you can add games to steam library but is that all games? Or just games made with certain programs or engines? If there's anybody here who plays smut on steam deck holla at me lol

I have both of these devices for mystical reasons.

Steamdeck had no real issues with most things, but on some games you would need to pick your flavor of Proton to use if the default didn't work. I felt like that sometimes contributed to some bloat since each game had its own environment.

Some games just don't work with Proton, but typically not your average porn game. That's more like actual steam games. The mouse track pad on it is very nice.

For the Ally (I have the original, none of the recent ones), I've had no issues with any game except Agnietta (spelling), which just doesn't seem to work with modern windows anymore for some reason. It worked prior to some random windows update a year ago.

Everything else runs flawlessly on it since its window.

The Ally is significantly peppier than the Steamdeck, but it you are just playing up to porny RPGMs you should be fine. You will be resolution limited on both to some degree but overall it shouldn't be a problem. I haven't had many issues with it and love it for portability and it works well with my tiny hands and while it does get a little heavy after a while, it's ok!

You can add to Steam for both and get to use the Steam overlay for controller mapping.

If you're not familiar with Linux the learning curve to doing some things will be more difficult on the Steamdeck, but it's great for the price point. Recommend either!

I'm also trying to decide wether to get a SD OLED or the first ROG Ally, both at the same price. Software shouldn't be a problem since you can install any OS in both of them.
I don't know if I should value the touchpads more or the better performance. I can also just always stream from my desktop PC so the touchpads maybe make more sense.

OLED is very nice. When you see it in a game it definitely pops. I have the OLED switch and love it.

For the handhelds though, I have gotten used to the joystick mouse on the Ally and have come to prefer power and the ease of windows over the finicky Steamdeck, especially since I do more indie stuff on like Itch and lesser known Steam games. Having the Windows backbone has just made it seamless. Messing around with Proton versions got annoying after a while, but the mouse trackpad was very very nice and I do wish the Ally had one. I have not seen an Steamdeck OLED but I'm sure it looks great!

Are there a lot of people using steamdeck for these games? I'm wondering if i should integrate first-class compatibility to my project

I'm a big guy with big hands, my thumb hurts just looking at the right stick on the ally lol. I'll probably just go with the deck though. Guess I better start researching what the heck proton is lol thanks for the reply!

I never use a full computer except for work and development. I don't even own a full size computer anymore. But I'm not sure I'm average, I like to by cozy on a snuggly chair under a blanket.

Hmm i definitely understand that, actually sounds like the best way to play games , unfortunately no access to a steam deck yet, i keep telling myself to buy one but i always forget :(

Since our game is currently a 'point & click' type of game, have u had any experience with those types of games on the deck? How is it to control these types of games (Does it use like mouse emulation or something?)

You play them with the trackpad using it as a mouse (just like a trackpad on any laptop really) you use the trigger buttons as mouse buttons it works fine but can strain the thumb after a while or you just use the touchscreen for the same thing, it just works in my experience but as already mentioned mileage will vary based on game
