Hello, my name is Siderophilia and I have played Stygian Flowers v0.3.1 by Viroa.
Stygian flowers is an RPG focused on a series of boss encounters, starring a cute white-haired girl who goes to the underworld to bring back her friend.
As a turn-based RPG it holds up very well. The nature of the game means there is zero reason or even possibility to grind. Instead the game incentivizes thinking through your skill setup (with the possibility to respec freely) and developing individual strategies for each individual battle. With the first two battles serving as something of a tutorial, from that point onward the balance of every single fight is finely tuned to make it possible with a decent range of builds but always retaining the challenge. If this isn't your cup of tea I think the game is far less enjoyable. Even though the author was kind enough to offer an option to automatically win every fight, I think resorting to that on more than sporadic occasions largely removes the most satisfying part of the game and leaves a rather lackluster experience. If I have any criticism it's that the battles sometimes become a little too reliant on memorizing enemy attack patterns, to the point that you can sometimes feel like you're actively hurting your progress by changing your builds, since it will also occasionally affect enemy attack patterns.
The assets for the game seem fitting although some maps look much more barren than others. On the other hand, a lot of the time the strength of the environments is the way the author manages to create a vivid environment with limited assets, not least seen in the beginning of the second act. In fact a lot of the most likeable components of the game, the challenge factor of the battles and impressive environment design, don't really become apparent until the second act. The game also has a music track which fits surprisingly well into the atmosphere, and right from the opening menu, the game manages to nail a certain tone which it consistently keeps through the whole journey.
As far as writing goes, the language is excellent, not only correct but also displaying a rather impressive use of vocabulary without stepping over the line to sounding pretentious. The story is a well known trope but it hasn't been overdone in this type of games, and the setting and cast of characters is interesting enough. However this is also where my core criticism comes in, which is that the game suffers quite a bit from being a decent game with the porn tacked on, rather than the porn being woven into the narrative. The majority of the scenes don't really feel connected to the setting of the game to any extent. This becomes most evident upon losing the third battle (Yes, why is the MC in a schoolgirl outfit? I guess the author just wanted it that way). The way you're immediately thrown back to before the battle, while streamlining gameplay (which is much appreciated), also sort of gives the impression that these things aren't happening to the MC canonically. It might just be that I'm a corruption enthusiast and would like to see more lasting impressions of sexual encounters while the author set out to do something else, but even so I can't shake the feeling that a lot of sex scenes are only loosely connected to what goes on during the rest of the game. Most of the scenes also kind of feel like their "own thing" and so far it's unclear if there is any core fetish to the game. With the very well done dark atmosphere to the game as a whole, some of the scenes despite their non-consensual nature feel almost a little cute and vanilla in comparison.
In summary, Stygian Flowers is an excellent game with some nice porn in it. If you enjoy the RPG genre and often find yourself frustrated by grindy and poorly balanced combat in other porn RPGs, this is a strong recommendation. 5/5
