Yes, really.

Copyright free isn't the same as free to use and especially not the same as free to use in a commercial product. Face the fact, for many games here the sounds and music are the biggest part of the costs in development. Especially when you're trying to sell your game on Steam like the Naughty Captain with Summer Scent did.

Sure, there're games where the devs don't give a flying duck about licenses. But when the dev isn't living in a country where law enforcement don't care about such things, it's not really worth the risk.
I don't really know why some people care so much about sounds. I always silence music in games. It distracts me. In addition, it is mostly monotonous, which makes it annoying.

Same. The default is always way too loud. I turn sounds down too, but music is 99% of the time all the way down.

In some games the music is pretty nice, but actually I care much more about sound effects

I admit that there are games where good songs were used. And I know that this is a rather expensive solution. Free music is of inferior quality. It is often looped and one fragment is played all the time. The sound effects are cool if they are not generated artificially.

Dev Update #295

ep6_sc23_040.jpg

Scene 32.

The script for scene 32 is ready. I managed to bring it down to about 7200 words. It's still more words than what I aimed for but I'm afraid I can't edit out anything else from it. I also cut the scene and prepared it for posing. I planned 241 shots and 2 animations. However, I'm not entirely satisfied with that cut and I might have to revise it as I will pose the scene. The scene does contain some "action" but it's first and foremost a conversation scene so I expect it to be fairly easy to pose, at least for its largest part.

I've already started working on the posing. I'm currently reworking Jack's room. The night light I came up with for it doesn't work anymore since I updated Daz to a more recent version. Light is always a touchy subject but I'm not really worried about it. I think I have found a decent recipe for these new ghost lights.

Scene 31.

I post-processed all the images and animations loop for scene 31. I'm pretty happy with the image quality. I hope you will be too.

Scene 31's code has entered phase 3. That means I coded in all the images, dynamics, and animations. That also means that I was able to test it. And it works pretty well. I still have some heavily mixed feelings about the animations. The image quality is great, and the animation is fluid enough, in my opinion. The animation itself however is a bit robotic and repetitive. I know it's inevitable, but it still bothers me. The thing is, I don't have the computing power to do anything better anyway. So that will have to do.

If you have bought Summer Scent on Steam, the game is in dire need of positive reviews. Please, consider writing one! Thank you!

The quick sum up :

  • Day 6 Part 6 will contain 3 new scenes: scenes 30, 31, and 32.
  • Day 6 Part 6 will contain 1 reworked scene: Day 2, scene 3.
  • Day 6 scenes 30 and 31 are fully written, posed, rendered, and proofread. Post-processing and coding stage #2 are done.
  • 18 746 words of new content so far.
  • 3 331 lines of code so far.
  • 576 shots are planned, 335 are posed, and 335 are rendered.
  • 5 animations have been posed, and 2 more are planned. 330 / 330 frames rendered, 330 post-processed.
  • I'm currently posing scene 32.

Since dev is satisfied with the effects, the update should be good. We are waiting.

Good sound is a major undertaking. There are reasons why "sound engineering" is a whole profession.

And that is separate from music composition. And not all good composers are good at soundtrack composition.

I have played a lot of games that have mediocre and repetitive use of sound - mostly from canned sound effects. And repetitive use of canned music that does not really fit quite right with the game content.

Good sound is not a small ask.

Dev Update #296

ep2_sc1_021.jpg

Little progress this week and not much to say.

I've lost Monday to Easter's celebrations and had some other work to do during the week. However, I still managed to rework the light in Jack's bedroom and add it to the set I'm using to pose the scene. I posed the first 32 shots. So far, the only difficulty I encountered was the lack of time. I hope to progress faster next week.

I will start rendering scene 32 this weekend. I don't expect any issues.
