Are there any *technical* explanations that I'm unaware of as to why many sandbox games have routes tied to others? For example, you need to progress with X LI to advance with Y LI. It's kind of jarring since sandbox games *supposedly* give you a sense of freedom.
Most content is not gated to other relationships in SA.

I know that there are certain things that need to happen - sequence wise - for some things to advance with Suzie.

If you are referring to keeping track of when certain women are available - there is a Very good 'help' button to use for this very purpose - the blue icon just to the right of the diary icon on the top of the image.

Originally, a couple more characters were tied to one another.

J..D got rid of it, to give you guys more freedom to choose which characters you might want to play and those you might want to ignore.

That's obviously not possible for Shannon, Sarah, and Suzie.
Those three are tied together.

Except for those three characters, all the other characters are standalone.
