Tag Baiting

1. You seem to assume developers add tags to their games in order to "bait" innocent players to play their games. For various reasons it is not a wise decision to own your game thread on a piracy site, hence many developers don't own their F95 threads, especially the big ones. When developers don't own their threads, it's a F95 uploader who updates the game's tags and that person has no incentive to bait you by applying wrong tags.

2. In the cases where developers do own their threads, they are not supposed to violate the site's rules. If you see a completely unrelated tag in a game tread, feel free to report it.

3. Unfortunately, tags serve two purposes and their applications don't always overlap. I call these purposes warning and attraction. A warning is used to "warn" people a fetish exist they don't care for. An attraction tag exists to inform potential players that their favorite fetish exists in the game.

The problem lies with the dual purposes of the tags. "Warning" tags are applied for even the smallest existence of a tag in a game, some players will not play the game even if a fetish they dislike only appears in one scene. Ideally, we'd want attraction tags to be added to a game only if said fetish is dominant in the game, i.e. a Big Breasts tag will be applied to a game only if most of the girls have a larger than average chest (and not just one girl). However, since tags are used both for warning and attraction they become inaccurate since warning tags can be misinterpreted as attraction tags, and thus as baiting.

My understanding of the question was, that some devs put all sorts of tags in their games just to have a bigger target audience, without the game focusing on these tags, nor caring about utilizing them properly and thus making it them kinda pointless to have them in the first place, because all they do is to lure people in who are looking for those tags, but only getting one or two small scenes with it.
How can I make the sentence even more convoluted and add more commas?:unsure: :HideThePain:

Basically like adding a Japanese girl to have the asian tag, adding a black girl for the interracial tag, or a single scene with a niche kink to get that tag too.

So it's not really about the F95zone tagging and thus adding wrong tags, but the game itself. :unsure:

Couldn't have said it better myself. My ESL probably got it wrong, maybe I should have put "Game" instead of "site"

...devs who sell their games on a platform like Steam.
Mostly devs who sell their games. Also: for... sensitive tags some patron platforms object venomously, it's hard for a developer to claim he has no idea where this patch comes from while he is the owner of the thread.

Genuinely curious what reasons would that be, if we exclude devs who sell their games on a platform like Steam.
In no particular order:

  1. some members will expect that you leak your game by yourself, releasing each update here the instant you release it to you supporters;
  2. some members (not OP) will accuse you to manipulate the tags in order to lure people to support you;
  3. some members will accuse you to manipulate the thread and censor all criticism by deleting the posts (what you can't do even if you own the thread);
  4. the same members will accuse you to manipulate the rating by deleting the negative reviews (what you can't do either);
  5. more members than usual will assume that you're at their service, and order you to do every changes they want to see in your game, then insult you if you don't;
  6. it's more difficult to protect your IP and ask a site to delete a leaked version of your game, when yourself let it slide here;
  7. if your gave have patch for borderline content, it's more difficult explain (who said pretend?) that they are fan made;
  8. More members will assume that you don't need support, since you offered the game all by yourself.

And those are just the reasons that crossed my mind when reading your question.

These days the winning move is look at developer notes where the dev says what the game is about.
You can see the tags the dev put out and see they disagree with the tags the thread has (which show on up on search) so its prob not a big part of the game and the taggers simply wanted to waste your time by having that game show up in your search with their fake tags.

The best scenario is when a game has like 50 tags and the dev notes dont say anything relevant so you have zero clue what the game is about or what its focus is.

Treat any Ren'py game with "turn-based combat" or "combat" with extreme suspicion, had to learn that lesson when I started playing porn games.

Not really egregious use of tags, but I would occasionally run into a game where the Dev/Uploader will apply a tag to a game because 'it will have that content at some point in the future', usually it was something like the pregnancy tag. There wouldn't be any preg content in the current version, but the Dev has it planned, just not implemented yet.
Usually things like that get removed pretty quickly and folks will usually point it out to the Dev/Uploader, but I wouldn't consider it an egregious (or baiting) use of tags.

Any kind of SEX tag when the only sex that happens in game is a dreamscene. That really kicks my bucket.
And there is the kinetic novel 'sandbox' :sneaky:

Oh god, I hate this... Having to goes everywhere in order to find where the following, and only available, scene will happen. When will devs understand that this fake free roaming approach don't add to their games ? It just add to the player anger.

If there's only one scene coming next, bring us there, don't make us waste our time searching for it.

I wish the tags were more specific. I've had a fair amount of bad experiences playing sandbox games, so I skipped that tag from my preferences. I can enjoy VNs with free-roaming moments (if they're well applied and immersive enough), but here the majority of stories that implement that get tagged as sandbox, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
