Overview:
Taken to Task tells the tale of Lane, a struggling freelance writer who is married to a great gal named Kimmy. The two love each other, but they are having problems. Is it lack of communication? A mundane sex life? Lane has no clue. He’s not even willing to admit to Pinky that there are problems. And so, being a goddess with a puckish sense of humor, Pinky gives Lane a set of three tasks to accomplish, three things that hopefully will enlighten him about his relationship with Kimmy… and relationships in general. Can Lane possibly learn how to make his wife happy (or at least prevent her from leaving him!)? Lane doesn’t like where the lessons start, with the implication that his wife might be a closeted lesbian.
Surely he would know if such a thing were Kimmy’s true desire… wouldn’t he? Pinky’s been teaching poor, stupid humans lessons for millennia, and she’s not shy about doing things such as changing reality so a clueless man such as Lane can gain a better understanding of women… and what better way than to temporarily give him a female body? And so Lane becomes Laney, the woman he might have been had he been born a girl. He has his old memories, of course, but also gains some new ones, from the life he would have lived had he grown up as the other gender.
