Welcome to a development thread for Tell Me A Joke, a DAZ rendered Ren'Py visual novel. I've been playing around with this idea for a while, and decided to finally begin to put it in action.
What is Tell Me A Joke?
Perhaps unsurprisingly, given that it's a DAZ VN, Tell Me A Joke is college themed visual novel. It centers around the main character who is enrolling in a prestigious arts university in an attempt to further his creative skills and put himself on a path to following his dream of becoming a comedian. Do you need to go to college to be a comedian, I hear you ask? Well, no, all you really need to do in real life is turn up to an open mic. But I digress.
The game will be fairly slow burn, with a focus more-so on romance and character development than jumping straight into the deep end. I'm hoping to do a good job of developing the relationships between the characters, and making the characters themselves feel individual and well-defined.
As far as tags go, the game will be pretty vanilla. Any basic tags you can assume will be in, anything particularly niche or extreme, not. There won't be NTR (as far as I'm aware, but I get that there's different definitions etc. so idk). The game will be an optional harem. There will be individual paths for the six girls (more on them later), and they'll all be compatible together. So if you only like two of them, you can just roll with those two. If you like all of them, you're very greedy, but you will be able to date them all simultaneously.
It is now later. Let me introduce you to the girls.
Sloane Parker
Sloane is a student who lives on the same corridor as you. She's studying acting, and takes a few courses alongside the MC.
Meghan Laws
Meghan is a student studying music. She plays guitar, wants to be a recording artist, and has already had some clips go semi-viral on social media of her singing.
Delta Cassidy
Delta is another student who lives on the same corridor as the MC. She's studying fine arts, is an excellent painter, but isn't confident in her ability and doubts her chances of making a success of things.
Mila Reynolds
Mila is Meghan's roommate. She was a child model and extra actor but has since realized she'd rather be behind a camera than in front of it, and while she has some experience on set, her actual passion is photography.
Ashlyn Truong
Ashlyn is also a character I haven't full got the backstory for yet. I have a couple ideas, but she's definitely the least developed of the main girls so far. At least she looks good, I guess.
Prin Archer
Prin is not a student. You'll meet her somewhere else. Ooh, how exciting!
Hopefully at least one of those girls catches your eye.
At the moment, I have plans for 3 full episodes. I have an ending in mind, but have yet to fully plan exactly what I want to include, so I can't say for sure how many more episodes there may be after that. I don't anticipate it being a very long game, but we will see.
My current plan is to release a fairly short demo at some point, to gauge interest, and go from there. I can't promise that the demo will come any time soon, but I'm working on it. Here's a few renders I've made so far.
My hope is to set up a patreon alongside the release of the demo, as well as an itch.io page, with a view to selling the game both on itch and steam with the release of episode 1. Will that happen? Here's hoping!
Thanks a lot for checking out this dev thread. I can't say for sure how much I'll be updating on progress, but I'll try my best to post here with anything major. Any feedback/questions are welcome.
