just started the game, had a character offer me a job handing out flyers. however i don't see any action available to do the job, and didn't see anything in the text that mentioned any restriction on work. any idea how i start it?

Depends on which version you are playing.
It was broken, and removed for the latest public release. Should be back in with next release.
Are there any other similar games with originally male female protag? Or maybe not so similar, why not.

Give "The Repurposing Center" a look. It's not exactly the same, but it might be close enough.
Non of the things noted in a new update are actualy in the game, so i asume it just doesnt work on old saves at all?...
What things? Noted where? Which update? How old a save?

Next "proper" update will likely be 3.5, so yes, this seems to be a dev build, which can be unstable.
There are no signs that a version jump to 0.4.0 is coming soon, so next public is almost guaranteed to be 0.3.5, yes.
And the "new" build here is a Patreon build from almost 6 weeks ago. A bit of an odd timing, but who knows what the source is.
(Pro tip: You can read the headlines on the Patreon posts without signing up for anything, so it is easy for anyone to check what the current build is.)
As always, if you want to play this particular game, you are probably better off sticking with the latest public instead of whichever leaked version is the latest. While some leaked builds are almost as bug-free as a proper release, others are almost unplayable. And you never know which you get.
