So, there’s a lot to say about this game, so I’m afraid I’m going to ramble a bit. The irrationally tragic rape of the elf Marie (what a long title!) is an old rpg (released in 2014) of OneOne1, a company from which we now know well what to expect. I want to emphasize the age of the game because it will be felt, especially in the menus and customization possibilities, but otherwise it is quite enjoyable even now, since the gameplay is the classic rpgmaker experience, with the complete package of 2d isometric map, turn-based combat, etc., which is still around today.
The gameplay has nothing interesting to report, except that the fights are quite though, but the number of enemies per floor of a dungeon is always well calculated, so as to level our heroine at the end of each floor, so you never risk the under-leveling. Each enemy is weak to a certain magic element (or, alternatively, to physical attacks), so it will be enough to discover the Achilles heel of each mob to facilitate the experience.
A fun detail is that, if Marie is naked in battle, then she becomes faster and does more damage, while if she is wearing armor, she is slower but has greater defense.
The art is made by Taro, one of the veteran designers of OneOne1 and I do not mind his artstyle; the erotic scenes are quite varied and numerous, even if the logic behind them is always the same: they are either short sequences of harassment, or are the beginning, and then the end, of a long rape, often mass, against Marie by humans or monsters indifferently, with her initially frightened and riotous and then, in the end, completely lost in pleasure.
The translation is bad, clearly done by machine, but still understandable for those who want to discover the game story, which is what I really want to dwell on, because it really hit me (in negative).
Spoilers ahead:
The country where the adventure takes place was once dominated by elves who one day, a long time ago, went to war against humans who, despite the magical strength of the elves, managed to defeat them: since then, every elf has been enslaved and forced to obey the orders of every human, with the absolute prohibition to rebel or harm them. We are thus in the present of history, in a world dominated by humans, where the elves (strangely all females) are subject to all kinds of harassment and violence, especially sexual, and are exploited, given their strength, as adventurers to fight monsters, without receiving anything in return. Racism will be an integral part of the story and therefore, if you are sensitive to this theme, better avoid this game, because it will be so heavy: Marie will be insulted, hated and victimized always and everywhere, regardless of the good she tries to do. But even in this dark world there is a light: the egalitarian movement, which is fighting for the violence against the elves to stop. And it is precisely in an egalitarian family that Marie finds her reason for living, what makes her resist all this horror: a child who loves her and treats her like a friend. But one day the child falls victim to a mysterious disease that appears to be incurable: the only possibility would be to find three magical artifacts, spheres scattered throughout the continent, able, if gathered, to make a wish come true. And so Marie decides to leave, in an extremely dangerous and hostile world, to save her only friend, only with the support of the egalitarians, who see in this act of altruism a possible flag for their cause.
The story goes on until she arrives at the capital, with Marie trying to do good while trying to get the artifacts, only getting hate and violence in return, but developing an unexpected power. The elf turns out, in fact, to be a kind of magical vampire/ succubus, whose power increases while absorbing the life energy of people, a legendary creature of extreme power that could change the world.
Once in the capital, however, the story undergoes a sudden change (as often happens in Japanese works) and becomes extremely over-complex and convoluted.
I will not elaborate on the ending and leave it to you to find out for yourself how it goes, but I will just note one emotion: one of the scenes that takes place in the capital is so cruel to Marie that it made the pit of my stomach close, so much as I perceived it as unfairly cruel to her. Perhaps it is me being overly empathetic, but it really struck me.
A real shame that there is only one ending and is not influenced by any choice made.
To conclude, Elf Marie is a quite unique experience, not so much for the erotic side, in line with the other OneOne1 games, or for the gameplay, but for the emotions it aroused in me (mostly anger, and confusion towards the end) and the story it tells, cruel to the point of absurdity towards its protagonist, who does nothing to deserve what happens to her. I don't know if I feel like recommending this game, but I really think I'll carry it in me for a while longer. Three and a half stars, maybe those who like dark stories might enjoy it.
