RPGM - The Last Sovereign [v0.75.4] [Sierra Lee]

Just a fantastic game all around. A refreshing, well written, well flashed out story that develops in an admittedly pretty generic world, but a generic world with a lot more depth than most. Join our chosen hero, in his quest to defeat the corrupt king...and then have him die a few minutes in, because our goddess can't choose worth a fuck. And so begins the story of the actual protagonist, a reasonable, not chosen veteran type warrior.

This is a compelling beginning that immediately tells you of it's intention of mocking RPG tropes, and telling an actual story. This is done so well and in such hilarious ways throughout the game that you could almost think that such mockery is the game's theme and intention, but you would be wrong. Instead of having just a deconstructionist parody of an RPG, what instead fills the void left by the generic RPG nonsense is a great exploration on the political side of the hero's journey.

Instead of just wacking slimes for the non descript adventurer's guild that seem to have an unlimited budget of gold to be spent on menial tasks, our heroes have to take a more realistic approach towards power. This is a game of resource management. Every single resource in the game is finite, and the players task is to optimize spendings between economic growth and equipments for the party. I would strongly advise keeping the wiki open while you play, because the decisions you take in this optimization are crucial, and reverberate pretty far into the story. That can be a negative to some, but researching the impacts of my investments and seeing where they'll lead me so I can plan a route through the game is right up my alley and this game is just a paradise for that.

The story and themes of the game are also very well explored and the crutch of "the protagonist can literaly mind control everyone if he wants to" is used pretty well to cover up any writing shortcomings, while also not being overused to the point of eliminating all the stakes. In both of those aspects, it reminds me a lot of Ikusa Megami Zero. Obviously, the development process between this game and IMZ is very different and it would be completely unfair to compare them in terms of quality, but I'm surprised a comparison could even be made. A true testament to this game's quality.

The game is not all quality however. I mean, the only reason I'm only now playing it and writting this review is that infamous RPGM tag. And as far as RPG maker games go, this one is incredibly competent, but it's still an RPGM game, with all of the shortcommings that implies. Battles can be exceptionally dull, which isn't that big a deal, since once again, this game is a lot less about combat than your average RPG, but it is what it is.

And last but not least, the protagonist, altough not a chosen, he is still kind of a Mary Sue. His knowledge of everything is explained (to an extent) but since it all already happened offscreen in the past, and in extremely non descript ways, it does feel like the story will just pull anything out of it's ass and attribute it to his experience. And the central trait to his character, that allows the story to occur in the first place, his incredible willpower to resist the corruption is as much of a "oh, he's just the main character" as the "chosen by the goddess" trope.

But to not end on a bad note, I will also commend the acurracy in some of the game's mechanics and easter eggs. Particularly, the writter seems to have a good economic and historical grasp on real life events and the way he uses it accentuates the fact the world is in complete chrisis perfectly. There are many examples, but the most important one, and most central to gameplay is the usage of two currencies, Sx and ProN, most similar to what happened during the south sea bubble crisis. It also makes perfect sense that a world that uses generic monster drops as literal currency would addopt such a system to stop inflation and move away from whatever their version of the gold standard is. And this accentuates the fact this world is completely dysfunctional, becuase...y'know...this system didn't really work well in real life. So it's a neat little piece of enviromental storytelling, of which there are a lot.

I seemed to have forgotten to talk about the porn. And that's because there's not a lot of it. It's there, and it's used as a plot device, but there's very little art, and honestly a lot less focus than you would expect. Sex scenes are decently written and the art that's there is passable, but scenes are short and interspersed throughout the game. Don't download this if you want porn. If you want a real game though, 5/5 couldn't recommend it more

It's incredibly well written, very engaging, funny, tense, and it works in tandem with its more explicit elements. This game is too good to be a porn game, but uses the porn to tell its story. Honestly one of the best games I've played, period.

Installed it to fap, but stayed for story and forgot about fapping, played it around year ago, 80+ hours, now waiting for game to be finished to replay and complete it.
Good world building, good story, especially for a porn game, vast variety of characters with well written and unique personalities and good humor on top of it all.
    For me greatest downsides was:
1: That it is text based. though i know that art is in progress i played it in steam and i 've seen update logs, so i guess it's outdated.
2: Fact that it is rgpmaker, i got used to it now, but i still see it as downside, because of controls, unholy fuck it's interface is not convinient, it's not only about this game, but can be said about them all, some more some less, this game is more or less fine, compared to some others.
    3. Hard to predict outcome of choices, sometimes it's possible without walktrough.

The Last Sovereign has some amazing writing and story behind it.

The characters, especially the MC, is very, very well written. It's not one of those games with some basic dialogue which is only a scratch away from revealing the emptiness. No, this character is actually quite smart, it is clear that there were some very good writers behind this game.

They also go on about world building, politics and what not. There were times where I thought "Why not make use of X faction" or "maybe consider Y" and the MC some of the times actually considered those factors as well. That was a new experience from an adult game.

The only thing that I wasn't a fan of was the CGI. It seems kind of dated. It probably isn't, and it might just be the style they went for, but I'm not a fan.

Generally, think of this game as an RPG with adult themes and not the other way around.

    So, in short.
    The good:
    1. Very well written
    2. Good world building
    3. Deep MC
    4. Lots of dialogue
    5. You can influence the world and you have a choices to make.
    The bad
    1. The combat becomes tedious. I get that this is how RPGM works, but man..
    2. The CGI is dated, I'll even say poor. I don't think it was particularly interesting to watch.

Still, I ended up giving it 5. Do yourself a favor - see it as RPG and forget the adult part.

I play this for the story, but actually this time. Very well written, Sierra Lee is a phenomenal writer and through the course of the last few years has woven an incredible story in The Last Sovereign

Porn aside it is one of the best rpg games I have played.
It managed to capture my attention far better than Pillars of Eternity and that one was made by professionals.
The rather deep economic and political decisions bring a certain degree of awareness of choice which is lacking in most modern skyrim-type rpgs.

Even without the sex, this is still a very fun and entertaining game that everyone should try.

    Positives:
Story is fan fucking amazing, a fantastic world building with interesting lore to learn. Along with an excellent cast of characters to interact with, funny dialog to read, if you like any form of jrpg this is definitely one to play.

    Negatives:
This is purely my opinion but the lack of art will turn off some people from playing this probably because they'll think; "What? No art? How am I supposed to beat my dick with this? Do I have to read sex scenes? WHAT? That's nonsense! Booooo!!! 0/10!!!"

But for me personally? The sex-text are great to read. They are detailed and can ignite some fun imagination sexy time. So I don't think it's actually a bad thing, since well I like it, not to beat my meat stick but because I had to work hard to get those scenes with decisions made from hours of developing with the characters, investing time to get to know them, to understand their personality and see them develop from slutty succubus cumdump to a sweet innocent succubus cumpdump that will melt your heart... and dick. So yeah I like the text, make more text, but do add art at some point because they are great.

    Definitely a 10/10 for me...
AND IT'S NOT EVEN FINISHED YET!!! YES!!!

    TL DR (spoiler-free)
    Rating 2,5/5

+ The Story is really good
    + Some humor
    + The main protagonist

    - RPGMaker generic combat gets to you
    - H-scenes, even with the revamp aren't good enough not only there isn't enough art per scenes but there's no variety nor anything exciting about them.

To the dev if he reads it :
This is one of the games that would greatly benefit from a heavily modded RPgMaker engine (see Rinet's Quest combat) or a different engine altogether, a Shining Force / Fire Emblem combat system would catapult this game to a commercial success, i'm sure.

    Longer version: (SPOILERS)

The main protagonist not being the chosen one and even getting them killed is really refreshing, i don't think the game would be so popular without it.

On the other hand, RPGMaker "basic" combat is extremely tedious, i completed a previous version but getting back to it, i couldn't muster the strength to get very far and the bare bones h-scenes, graphic wise makes it tedious with no rewards.

A better engine with a very good combat (or a customized RPGMaker engine) and/or way better H-scenes (would need a very good artist and multiple pics per scenes) would turn it into a great game.

All I can say is I was expecting a LOT more considering the other reviews here. This game comes off as some weird fantasy-version of what women think men want. The main character is forced into a position where he (quite literally) is required to fuck in order to live, and he's not particularly excited about it. If that sounds appealing to you, by all means give it a shot. It wasn't appealing at all to me, I'd sooner eat dirt than willingly subject myself to a game that disrespects my character's autonomy.

If you want to be successful in this game I hope you like reading walkthroughs. With how scarce the actual "art" is you're better off just reading regular old text-based smut if this is the type of thing you enjoy, because you're going to be spending an inordinate amount of time reading mediocre descriptions of sex if that's what you're here for.

Ultimately this game is stuck at a weird crossroads where it *could* be a good game, and it *could* be good porn, but it's trying to do both, and failing to accomplish either. The sex and the combat both feel annoying at best and this would be far more enjoyable without either in my opinion, which is pretty disappointing.

If you're purely looking at this from a game-perspective I'd rate this a 7/10, but given that this website is almost exclusively about porn it feels idiotic to rate it in that manner. As far as porn goes, this is terrible: 4/10.

I would say I came for the "plot", but having previously played Ouroboros from Sierra, I thought I knew what to expect.

I'm happy to say that my expectations were not just surpassed, they were effing blown to the stratosphere.

Great story, excellent writing, engaging characters and gameplay that truly pushes the idea of an RPGM game to a completely different level. "AAA" games could take a lot of lessons from this.

Do yourself a favour and try this out if you haven't already. Can't wait to see what the completed version will look like.

Fastest Patreon pledge I've ever done.

This is an incredibly well made game. The story is compelling and could stand on its own without the porn. The characters are (mostly) very well written, and every stage of the game leaves me wanting more, waiting for more.

Editing this review to add: The story gets only more and more compelling as it goes on. I haven't finished it on account of the game being VERY LONG. But every one of my 100 hours, aside from maybe some of the open world sections, has been absolutely riveting. Compelling. Keeps me coming back for more no matter how long it goes.
    I. Love. This. Story.

The Last Sovereign is easily my favorite adult game ever, though not primarily for its actual adult content. Before playing TLS I always considered RPGM an engine for people too lazy to use something better like Unity or Ren’py. Part of this is because I believe traditional JRPGs to be an abysmal format for a game as grinding is simply worthless padding and the moves often cost so little mp and are so poorly balanced you just roll through the game spamming the same thing unless you die to bad RNG. TLS solves this by removing grinding, often giving you unorthodox prebuilt parties, and not presenting combat sections that overstay their welcome.

In terms of strategic resource management, the game presents a great number of potential investments which ultimately present no perfect solution. This adds to replayability and allows the way the investments interact with one another shows the dev’s commitment to constructing an internally consistent world.

However, as the game progresses and your character’s ambitions grow in scale so does the complexity of scenarios. Ultimately playing blind will afford you outcomes that can prove unsatisfactory to some and I have ended up using a guide while replaying. Even early on there is one choice in particular that can result in the loss of the only optional party member and it simply isn’t well signposted. I addressed this and other failings during voluntary replays that explored various opposed choices and as a min maxer/perfectionist type player I largely enjoyed it. You may not be a perfectionist type player which means you can ignore this warning. But if you’re like me and are annoyed by suboptimal outcomes you may wish to do a quick blind playthrough followed by a more thorough somewhat planned out one as you get deeper into the game as it quickly becomes much more complicated.

The writing is the facet of the game that first and foremost keeps me invested though. The characters and plot begin simply but with such obvious potential I was immediately invested. Characters aren’t all given overly detailed tragic backstories to endear them to you, they’re almost all endearing and memorable for reasons beyond simple emotional manipulation. Your characters ambitions are sometimes fulfilled, sometimes thwarted, and the unpredictability of this lends a great deal of tension to most events. There’s a natural progression where you start doing things like hunting down petty bandits and end up delving deeper and deeper into the magical foundation of the reality that displays a consideration of what a game needs to be to justify an average playtime of more than 50 hours so far.

The music isn’t appreciated by audiophiles from what I have read but for someone who just enjoys most music that isn’t too ambient I can say there are several tracks that I really love. I will listen to them independently and one that I whistle as much as any other song.

The only aspect of the game that I have come to appreciate less since I first played is the actual porn itself.

I enjoyed that aspect immensely, at least initially, simply because of my investment in the characters. The plot and character writing constructed a narrative and world so authentic that I was able to enjoy almost every scene even though I had to look past the fact that almost invariably revolves around situations that were simply too vanilla for me.

As I returned to the game after every update rather than taking it in all at once I found the investment in the characters no longer as strong as it had been during those weeks I had spent devoting hours every day to the game and was no longer able to look past my issues with the scenes. The way Sierra writes scenes is rather terse for someone who lacks a particularly powerful imagination. If your desires are limited to fucking and working together with a large number of beautiful, self-actualized women who love one another, and all love you, then you can ignore the next paragraph wherein I detail how the content in the smut doesn’t quite match up to my fetishes.

The inclusion of futa is extremely limited and the yuri almost invariably revolves around oral/fingering which isn’t for me. There are a few instances that might qualify as netori but the guy isn’t inadequate so much as evil so not really playing into that fetish. The closest to ntr is optionally your succubi using their bodies in extremely desperate circumstances for the greater good. There’s a slightly androgynous dude who offers himself to the mc who would be super cute, and an immense asset to the harem, if he were feminized and added in but he’s shot down by the mc whose straight so the feminization angle is never even considered. Still my experience of the game was without art so the inclusion of that might have made the actual porn aspect of the game have more staying power, I really can’t say. There’s also simply a considerable amount of titfucking which again, isn’t for me.

The fact a game this vanilla manages to be my favorite says it all when I’ve played so many games that better pander to my kinks but don’t actually amount to great games.

one of the best game on this site in my opinion , very deep , well written and distinct characters , coupled with an engaging story. 10/10 game very easy to get invested in, cant wait for more of this to released

FIrst off, you can't fap to this. Unless you get off to text like how some people in the past do.

RPG Elements are just generic which is sad, the game really shines through its story. Mob fights to level never convey a story, its just I kill you SO I GET STRONGER. Some fights are RNG based, if the mobs don't use a certain attack pattern in the first few turns prepare to restart, look at the wiki for hints. I spent hours restarting for these fights. But you know whaT, i did them anyway even if they are optional? I wanna farm those affection points and levels yo lol.

Story- Meh seems generic in the first few minutes. Oh oh hoh not generic. Oh you thought you're going to play as generic bang everything young protag? No no no, you play wholesome old man with more sexual control than young horny teenagers. And that's makes it good, one sympathizes with the parties objectives and really feels immersed in its world instead of just fuck and burn the world around you.

I have some waifus I would like to declare. Yarra. Aka.Qum Dumpe! Ogs from the start. But yarra has corrupted me and halflings are not bad too :)

Its more like a kingdom builder game, its cool.

Music, sometimes when I sleep I hear the combat sounds and I wake up from my nightmare. man f*ck this game, the music is stuck in my head.

Summary: good f*cking game, with good F*cking

Brilliant game. I honestly sometimes wish this wasn’t a porn game, so I could be fully open about loving this game.

The sex scenes are great, with all of the art looking good (apart from a couple near the start of the game that look like they were drawn with crayons, but those are ones you don’t really go back to).

Story is amazing, with better writing than most movies. The world feels real and lived in, and never ignores the “boring” parts that most fiction forgets about like army logistics.

Despite the large harem - 24 members in all - none of them feel like they’re in the story for the sake of having another woman to fuck. All of them have something to offer both the story and the player. The MC is a great departure from the kind of dumb protagonist who’s only goal in life is to fuck things as much as possible, and is very intelligent, and is prepared to play the long game to achieve his goals.

My only complaints are that the pacing slows too much in a couple of parts in my opinion, and that the combat is kind of repetitive. All in all, an amazing game.

despite the premise and the gratuitous amounts of sex, I don't view this as a porn game.
New visuals are wonderful, and text for scenes is amazing (masturbate worthy, as is the point of these games), but if you are here for purely sex/porn reasons?
    This is not for you.

Where this game ABSOLUTELY SHINES is in character development, world building, intricacies, and a well developed, incredibly intelligent story that commands respect.

The world and scope of the story are massive. Characters actually have PERSONALITIES and develop in a truely meaningful way. There is a feeling of desperation and urgency when the story calls for it. Emotional scenes are actually moving.

This game is a tour de force of mature story telling, and not just comedy, sex, and violence.

I have over 50 hours of gameplay in, and I last played 0.43, so there is a lot more I haven't seen yet, and more yet to come.

Despite being in its 4th year, Sierra Lee offers monthly updates, and things continue to grow and develop at an impressive rate, with no sign of burnout (though she does focus on other projects as well, likely to keep her mind fresh).

There is no game that, in size, length, scope, and emotion, that I have found yet, that is its equal. This is quite obviously a labor of love, and a story that means a great deal to her.

    On an (unconfirmed) personal note?
Years ago, I had messaged Sierra Lee (through another forum) with a suggestion. As the succubus Q'um is the most sexual characterof the game, I had recommended a "scene" with her, that didn't have sex. Just the MC encouraging her to sit with him and talk. Something that would be a little confusing to her, at first, but show her that she was loved for more than just physical company.
There is a scene where just that happens... the only scene in the typical sex scene format (that I know of) where Simon just sits and talks with one of the girls.
I do not know if Sierra liked my idea, or if it was something she always planned, but it's a very touching scene, and I'd like to think I helped influence it.

Sex scenes read like an erotic novel targeted at middle aged women but the art is pretty good.

Overall game is great, interesting overarching storyline and well fleshed out characters. It takes a while before the core game really begins but after that it's hard to stop while playing.

Best story in an adult game hands down, better than a lot of general audience games. I''ve played 150 hours and it's not even done.
That said, walkthrough is a big help unless you're a masochist, and it has so much actual gameplay and story that it's kinda hard to play one handed.

The story in this game is better than most triple-A games, with a lot of choices that have consequences which makes it a great RP game in general.

The only thing I could wish for would be more effort into the actual sex scenes, either drawn or animated, since there isn't exactly a lot of visualization besides the pixel-art (which is superbly done however). It seems that half of the MC sexual encounters have a drawn sketch, while the other half doesn't.
