From a few decades of openness we're now shifting towards a deeper conservatism and closure to globalism and retrenchment of nationalism. Political climate will continue to shift indeed, but the internet IS slowly going to shit. Between the growing censorship and the obscene amounts of bot activity (both scraper bots taking up so much bandwidth that they temporarily take down websites and LLM AI activity attempting to pass as human interaction), things are not looking good...

The internet archive being legally in danger is also problematic, along with invasive DRM in media ramping up (games, ebooks, movies, series, music), but that's a topic for another day

Still not true. We went from the anarchy of the beginning to growing control of the systems and governments. But for each development they make, there is an eventual answer. Napster got shot down and everyone cried it was the end of piracy, then came emule, and when that didn't work as well in came torrents and so on. For each measure there is an answer, we just have to find the right one here. Freedom has to be gained, and has to be fought for, in this case against reactionary/conservative social movements and NGOs and the greed of corporations. Same old.
