Unity - ThornSin [v0.7.5] [Scarlet Paper]

    Rizzoning

A good roguelike monster/tentacle hentai sidescroller, but clearly still a work-in-progress. Played version 0.7.5.

    The good part:
Many different enemy types, many different hentai animations. Primarily stuff that plays when a monster knocks you down or if you get charmed. Charm also makes it so you can't escape the animation. You can fast forward the animation, though not as much as I would like. Some enemy types can cause pregnancy, debuffing your movement until the thing plops out. Some of the monster offspring helps you in combat, while others attack you.
The combat upgrades from special reward rooms are nice, although it's not very deep. If you took the ice bonus in the first room, you also take the ice upgrades in every following room.

    Now the bad part:
You can't enjoy the hentai at all, because you only get to see it in exchange for losing HP and healing is limited.
It is a permadeath game and don't unlock anything from making progress, not even gallery scenes. You always start from scratch and it takes a really long time to go through the early levels every time.
Later you get chased by fast enemies, while other enemies shoot projectiles and cast tracking pillar explosion spells every 2 seconds.
The mechanics are hard to understand in general. For example I still don't know what's up with the white/red bars that fill up whenever you take an upgrade. Doesn't help that the translation is inconsistent and just ends mid-sentence sometimes.
The game doesn't save your options settings when you quit the game.

This game needs a catch-up mechanic. It already has a results screen where it tracks the many different H-scenes of your run. Why doesn't it reward you for making the numbers go up?

    Porntai

Absolutely addictive and beautifully made sidescroller rougelike with actually challenging and fun combat and lots of detail put into the power system (for a hentai game at least). Definitely one of my favourites. I was skeptical at first because the main character's proportions were a bit exaggerated but that aspect wasn't as bad as I expected.

I might not be an experienced person on playing side-scrollers including AAA ones/popular outside H-genres. But I've played most of it around the H-genre. There's 1 that may surpass this with leveling, builds, upgrades & stuff but imho still this game is just more fun to replay & way faster in pace.
Ngl it's been my favourite H side-scroller for months, I really love the protagonist design, the vibe, the world building, other characters & even story is quite interesting at least for me even though it's not really exposed thoroughly.
I love how there's screen hit-shake effect with greatsword, it's just simple detail to make it very2 satisfying to use. I don't enjoy/like the H-scenes, unless the act 3/4 game over, the ending & merchant's are really good.
It may sound funny, but honestly I just simply love this game just to swing/parry that greatsword most of time and trying out random & various build selection. It's just pure fun.

Great game, had a lot of good time playing it. Honestly, at first I thought I wouldn't even bother with a review but here we are.

Combat: Kind of mid, you kinda out range most enemies in the game so winning this is not a problem. Great artifact system tho, which is a plus.

H-scenes: Wow holy hell does this game have a lot of them, all enemies have their own animation, top tier quality too. Some requires special interaction, I had a hard time finding out which so I just went onto dev's log, and voila, they were all there.

Art: Vibrant, beautiful. They really put effort into this.

    Version 0.7.5

Disclaimer: i'm playing on default difficulty ("ThornSin original setup") and have not beaten the 3rd boss yet. I'm not reading guides or using cheats because you shouldn't need to.

There are actually a lot of good concepts here. It includes some hard to find kinks like birthing, lactation, oviposition, and bestiality. It also has the mechanics for customising Inessa's costume and randomly generated maps. Unfortunately IMO all of this gets held back by bad ideas or just being too generic.

Based on this version, my biggest complaint is that the sexual content is actually difficult to get without dying. Secondly, scenes are inconsistent with being skippable or being forced to sit through them. This game uses that extremely stupid mechanic where sex attacks do HP damage. So to see a scene you often first need to take damage by getting knocked down or hit with an "oestrus" attack, and then you also take damage for the sex part too. And if you want to watch it again you take more damage. No i don't want to lower the difficulty and turn it into a braindead animation viewer but i shouldn't have to risk dying in a rogue-like to see the sexual content. Some enemies like the dogs will take you down to 0 HP without ever getting a scene because they seem to be incapable of knocking Inessa down. For the second point, just let me skip the fucking hyena scene. It takes way too long, can't be skipped, and i don't even like it. And since they move so fast, they always get to Inessa before anything else. It wouldn't be so bad if there was more than one scene per enemy but when there's one you don't like, it's torture for the player to have to sit through it when you can't skip it.

About the actual gameplay... it's not that great. The platforming is very generic and combat is just kind of there. I think the biggest problem here is that the individual enemies are not hard to beat alone but it can be challenging when there's a lot of them together. Since they all tend to start along the bottom of a room or fall down to the bottom without being able to climb back up, it's just more likely to be overwhelmed with the number of enemies. Again, this is only my experience up to the 3rd boss but since you restart at the very beginning every time, it just gets old and repetitive. What little "platforming" does exist doesn't matter because as mentioned all the enemies end up pooling at the bottom. The one nice thing about the combat is that the hit boxes and frames are all solid without any surprises. As in i never felt that a hit was bullshit.

Level design needs work. Each map is randomly generated including layout of the map and type of rooms you can encounter. But it doesn't seem like you're guaranteed to see anything except an exit to the next map. I've had runs where i have a ton of coins but never see a shop. I've also had runs with tons of keys and hardly anything to unlock. It needs more balancing so that your run isn't so dependent on RNG. Also, i absolutely hate backtracking and depending on where it makes you start in a map you may need to backtrack.

I think the art style is great but the animations might be an acquired taste. The dev seems to exaggerate quite a lot which means poses that look a bit comical with the way Inessa's body and limbs are bent in them. It ends up being on the complete opposite end of the scale from realism. You can tell the dev put a lot of effort into subtleties though because there's a lot of moving parts in her idle pose and the room backgrounds have animations too as examples. All the animations including creature movements and birthing look good, i just think some of the sex animations are exaggerated too much with the posing. You can tell the dev is taking advantage of a paper doll with unlimited movement of the joints.

I'm calling this mid for now. I think it has some core problems that are going to be permanently in the game but it does offer those hard to find kinks which is the main reason i'm playing.

TLDR Everything is good so far in "ThornSin v0.7.5", other than losing everything after either dying or beating the final boss, so here's hoping that changes.

Combat is tight and fun, and as far as I have seen, "ThornSin" doesn't have guro/gore porn, which is a plus in my opinion. Also, "ThornSin" has a pregnancy mechanic, which I'm always happy to see. I'm not sure if every enemy can impregnate her, but the few that got a hold of and violated her knocked her up with parasites that she later gave birth to.

I have high hopes for this game. I expect this game to be at top runner upon its completion. Currently followed, with great anticipation. ^_^

A porn game that seems to despise the fact that it's a porn game. Absolutely everything about the design is hell-bent on killing your boner and ensuring that you have an awful, terrible, no-good time trying to bust a nut while playing it. I'm not exaggerating when I say that the art and, to a lesser extent the animations, are the only good things about this game. Have fun getting them, though, because you've got some roadblocks to jump.

    • Saving is deliberately out of your control. The game has one single autosave that overwrites itself when reaching new areas and you're forced to reset when you die. We as a society unanimously decided that "game over rape" is an abomination of the highest order and it's been almost entirely absent from H-games for the better part of a decade because, obviously, punishing the player harshly for wanting to look at the PORN in your PORN GAME is stupid.
    • No level select. If you die and want to, say, get back to level 4 to see some content from a specific monster, you'll need to replay the entire game to get back there.
    • No gallery. The best you can get is to navigate to your save directory and make named backups of the save for each stage, then swap between them whenever you're after a specific flavor of content.
    • The game itself is pretty awful to play. It's intended to be a rogue-like, with currency you can spend in a shop and Binding of Isaac style treasure rooms that allow you a choice between two items. The problem is that almost every item I've ever found has been inconsequential, and none of them have any real kind of synergy. On top of this the fundamental game mechanics are also lackluster, with combat itself being boring and mundane.
    • Level design is boring as sin as well. Nothing much going on aside from basic platforms with enemies scattered about. Sometimes an enemy will spit at you, sometimes there will be a trap, but it's all quite boring.
It's very sad that, despite being in development for quite some time, no effort at all has been put into addressing the fundamental flaws with the game. There's potential for an easy 5/5 experience here, but the game and developer seem absolutely dead-set on trying to ruin what could be a great porn game in favor of instead creating the world's lamest rogue-like.

Seeing the gorgeous artistic qualities of this title and the great animations I had high hopes but the poor quality of this game reside in its game-design core ideas. The rogue-like type could've been interesting IF there was even something to win from replaying the game: I finished it and was just sent back to the hub.. So winning does nothing except seeing a little hentai animation.. and since losing makes you lose all progress, then what the hell was I playing this game for? Complete waste of time.

There's no gallery, you get PUNISHED for wanting to watch the hentai scenes (how stupid can that be, in a hentai game) and the gameplay is quite bad, on top of that.
ThornSin could be a great hentai game, but its core design ideas are just terrible and completely ruin the great art and animations, making it very difficult to enjoy playing. Very disappointing.

    Trickstar

Utter dogshit game for several reasons:

1 - There is only 1 save slot and auto saves to it, the fact this brain dead garbage of an idea is in this game in and of itself deducts a star already when any competent dev would allow you to at least have some save points in at least some predetermined locations for hard saves. The worst part though is how this combines with the second point.

2 - Going down to 0 HP for any reason starts you over at the beginning of the game with no chance to redo anything, nor does it even short cut you to floors to make shit easier. Literally having to restart the game that will autosave to a new save is so unbelievably retarded that is just sad.

3: YOU ARE LITERALLY PUNISHED FOR SEEING THE H CONTENT, now this is the gravest sin since this is a hentai game... Whenever you get into any scene with an enemy you constantly lose HP and the status effects in game prevent youi from escaping so you could be losing a ton of HP just by forced scenes you can't escape cause dogshit balance which can lead to you getting 0 HP and having to restart the entire game. Even on the lowest difficulty that is literally described as "For those who just want to see adult scenes and have the combat be dull and easy" you take so much HP just by going through the rooms with almost no ways to gain HP unless you get super lucky with item and ability spawns...

This game not only doesn't respect your time by punishing you for playing it and making you redo everything constantly, it is just poorly balanced and not thought out at all. It is a shame cause the art isn't half bad at all. I refuse to believe this is highly rated and suspect bot reviews because this is ridiculous with so many unforgivable design choices.

    SolidDZ

Another side-scroller with a nun MC. Sadly, this game is overrated and I've seen much better ones in quality. The game has smooth battle animations I liked. But that was the only pro I found. Many other features in the game seemed not ready.

    • Although it has many skeleton animations, non-battle animations looked surprisingly lousy at best with characters looking like real cranky ragdolls.
    • I can't tell much about its story as it is not even half-finished yet. The game has some "events" with a merchant but I hope it's not the main story of the game.
    • At this point of game status, 99% of play activities are running and battling without sufficient context.
    • More detailed map or quest log would be nice because player mostly doesn't know where she is or what her goal is.
    • Another crucial absence is a gallery which is essential to review history of important scenes without playing the whole game again.
    • Like most female-MC adult platformers, player has to intentionally lose the game to get the rewards - sexual arts/animations. But it's again 2025. Dev can solve this problem - a player doesn't have to lose for the rewards if the game unlocks each related sexual content when the player cleared each scene/phase. For this resolution, gallery is a must.
    • There are several small bugs. From simple translation errors to rigidbody handling errors (e.g., MC's children keep falling from platform), in-game keyboard display even though I was using a gamepad.
    • Lastly, dev doesn't seem to understand the concept of contrast. In many cases in the game, white text under bright background made it hard and annoying to read.

All in all, the game may have some potentials but seems 2-3 years of hard working away to be even close to an enjoyable side-scroller.

    ThornSin [v0.7.1]

Wonderful game, magical music and very nice visual style, there is not much content, but for the first playthrough and familiarization with the game is quite enough

+ Roguelike - Replayability and all that, there are actually enough items at the moment, but they're not very varied, so for now the best strategy is to collect damage + HP, at least that's how it worked for me.

+ Music - Like I said, it's just magical, every track is very relaxing and puts you in a little melancholy mood, except for the bosses music, some fast techno starts playing on them, which personally causes a little dissonance for me, but overall I like it

+ Holiness / Corruption - Two scales, increase during the run from item selection and from some lewd events if we are talking about the corruption scale.

I honestly can't be sure I know how they work because there's no manual in the game other than the control buttons, but holding one of the scales higher than the other determines what type of portal can appear after a boss, the chance of a portal appearing I don't know, and whether increasing the scale affects that I don't know either.

So far that's the only thing the scale does, but I suppose the logical thing to do would be to add items that require a certain number of points of one of the scales, or both at all

    0.7.1 version

4.5/5 for me, I want to mention a few aspects of the game

H-content - ThornSin is amazing in this regard. If you liked smooth, flowy and jiggly animations like in another highly rated side-scroller (I'm not mentioning it so this review complies with rules) , you'll love the animations in this one. Big variety of fetishes such as flesh "dimension", mind control, pregnancy and birth, enclosed spaces full of tentacles (imagine mimic chests etc.) . A variety of enemies that have their way with you like werewolves, slugs, goblins, insects, leeches etc. While most "interactions" happen when you are downed in combat, there's also cinematics either after game over, or in certain interactions.

Combat - I'm not a big fan of combat in side-scrollers, but I had no issues with this one. Default keybinds might take a minute or two to get used to, but that's probably the hardest part. 2 weapons as of this version, both have normal attack and special attack, one of special attacks is a block and riposte type attack if that's your playstyle, otherwise there is dodge. Every enemy has unique attacks that don't take to long to get used to. You can also find items and effects that buff you (e.g. enemies that stay close to you for long enough get frozen, dodging leaves behind a thunderbolt etc.)

Progression - This is a roguelike game, which means after dying, you start all over, losing all progress you made. Game is made up of zones, which are made up of rooms. You fight room through room until you find the entrance to the next zone. Every couple of zones the theme of the zone changes (2 zones are the forest, next 3 are ... etc.), with which the enemies also change.
It's important to note you can't leave the room before you kill all the enemies in it, which is an even bigger drawback since there is no gallery as of right now. So if you want to see animations from enemies toward the end, you have some work to do.

Conclusion - even as someone who's not a fan of either side-scrollers and roguelikes, I loved this game simply for its fetish variety and beautiful animations. The biggest drawbacks right now are the lack of gallery which, seeing as the game is still in development, I hope will be added in the future, and censorship which personally didn't bother me, but no censorship is better in any case.

    Nazzaroth

Yeah the art and animation are passable, but for me personally the anatomy is too exagerated

Other than that the gameplay side of it is severly undercooked right now. A lot of neat ideas coming from the roguelike setup, but currently you only have 2 weapons and ZERO permanent upgrades between runs.
And because you there is no way to skip early levels means you have to replay the 1st level OVER and OVER and OVER. Most stupidest design decision ever. And how the hell are non-skippable cutscenes still in there? Did seriously no one scream at the dev yet for this insanity???

The fighting system is also very meh, only one combo chain mashing and a little bit of dodge timing. The enemy design is boring as fuck as every one get's stunlocked by your attacks.

The guy below me saying this is better than nights revenge needs to lay of the bleach drinks for sure. How you ever can compare this to the greateness of NR is beyond me.

My suggestion is to jump in, enjoy the first 2 levels and then wait a while longer till this is actually a game.

Best side-scroller h-game with great art. I have been following the monthly updates for a year now. IMO better than Night of Revenge and Alien Quest Eve. Looking forward to the full release, the only drawback is I wish updates were more frequent!

    Pros:
    - amazing art with beautiful heroine
    - variation of scenes
    - extremly hot unforgiving dark fantasy world
    - interesting rogue like 2d sidescroller gameplay (normally not into roguelikes or sidescrollers, but this kept me hooked. Very hard on normal for a pleb like me though, but thankfully there are lower difficulties)
    - the tidbits about the story and the world seem very promising, if sparse

    Cons:
    - missing tooltips or explanations for many mechanics
    - sex scenes mostly on losing and no gallery
    - sparse story moments and background narration
    - some interesting mechanics like breastfeeding are currently a bit to conditional to access
    - sex scenes exclusively brutal rape or coercion (not a negative for me, but tastes vary)

Most negatives are related to the game being unfinished, so i won't hold them currently against it. The game is too beautiful and unique with outstanding gameplay for a porn game to pass up for these minor points.

The game's animations and art is definitely the selling point, and it's absolutely amazing. As of right now, the combat and story is lackluster, but the game's in beta so it's understandable. The difficulty isn't that high, but it's challenging and pretty fun sometimes.

    Played version 0.6.5

    Good
    1. High quality application startup. Shows animated developer splash, splash for autosaving, animated main menu
    2. Animated dialogue portraits
    3. The clothing system is multi layered and you have multiple pieces per layer unlocked at the beginning for you to customize your look with
    4. The “H Status” menu screen has animated close up pictures of pussy, ass, mouth
    5. Shopkeeper will give you money if you go through an animated touching minigame

    Issues
    1. Janky camera. It tries to frame the scene so your facing direction has the most space to view, but when it needs to change the other way it’s too fast. Jumping lifts the camera up too quickly - it would be better just zoomed out.
    2. Releasing a horizontal movement button doesn’t stop character movement immediately, there’s lots of skating
    3. Controller is supported, but character movement is only on the D pad
    4. Characters is metal armor over their boobs have the armor swaying
    5. The movement has horizontal acceleration that takes a second to get up to max speed. The max speed is way too fast for how zoomed in the camera is.
    6. The first room in the first dungeon has you progressing to the left. It should progress to the right like every other platformer ever
    7. Elements appear on the UI with zero explanation of what they are, can’t mouse over them for a tooltip
