My major issue is the erosion of trust.

Preface this by saying I like Tak, a lot. He's one of my favorite devs to talk with here because he's informative and seems friendly. I'm mostly disappointed in the decision but I think anytime a decision has come to a vote, Tak has went opposite of how I voted so I had a hunch it was going to come to this. Maybe I should have used reverse psychology.

I just don't understand how I'm supposed to justify spending more money on a developer that has abandoned two projects. Sometimes a decision to abandon is justified (poor health, etc) but the only justification I see here is that it's Tak's choice. It's the equivalent to being a child and asking why and getting told "because I said so."

I'm not gonna harp on the design of the new girls in the college VN. They are in progress and will most likely change a bit more before anything resembling a release is ready. Look at how many redesigns the Stardew Valley NPCs went through, some look nothing like their original forms.

Any VN's success mostly comes down to luck. Sure, you can bolster your chances with technical skill, good writing, etc, but the largest factor is luck. You need the right eyes on it, the right wallets to open, and the right mouths to spread. There's plenty of absolute garbage VNs that pull in bank and really good VNs that sputter along financially or eventually get abandoned.

All I know is, around a week ago, Tides was still viable because Tak was looking for testers for the spiced up scenes. Now? Not so much. I would think that a decision this important would need more time.
Yeah trust or lets call it belief in my case is gone. People who say this is normal behavior are crazy imo lol.

You cant create this big (wannabe at this stage) epos, intending to spin this big story over three games - all connected - hype everyone for this setup and than just go "Nah, fuck it, i'll make a college romp now".

This whole decision making proccess is so incredibly fickle and this wasnt even his first learning project anymore, thats was the spice pirate. He should have learned these lessons already.

I suspect he will lose drive and motivation with the new college game quickly too if it doesnt become a immediate economical hit which imo is unlikely in general with new avn development at the moment.

I know this feeling of losing steam and interest in a story youre writing, getting new ideas and prefering to work on that ... thats (and other reasons lol) why i would be a shit writer who wouldnt get things done and at this point it feels very likely that Tak is the same which is bad. Waaaay too erratic and jumpy to get something this big done without losing interest.

Yeah his private life was part of this decision but he knew about these changes already when he started to create tides, didnt he?

I wonder what % of all of you complaining actually supported the game instead of just freeloading and playing for free I mean I guess you reap what you sow you didn't support the game which lead to it getting canceled and now the dev has to make a game that will appeal to more people actual paying customers. University games are extremely popular with the devs level of writing and quality I think he can easily pull it off even if the market is saturated with them more people are bound to try it out and drop some money over some niche pirate game that is for sure make no mistakes and anybody saying otherwise is delusional almost all the top selling AVN on steam are university/college games they make money for a reason.
How can you blame that on the viewers if Tak never tried to monetize ToS in the first place? I subbed when he realeased chapter 2 (he did that for free) because i couldnt stand him releasing such a high quality game for free (while i pirate other games where devs are more greedy ...).

But thats the thing, he never even tried to earn money with ToS or to make it economically viable. Not just the patreon setup, his dev decision leaned towards his own passion and fullfilment instead of appeasing usual avn demands (like how he went with softcore).

He a) never reached the point of constant updates/content to see if ToS even is able to get some steam and b) never tried to earn money with it on patreon with giving it out free and uses that as "justification" to switch games again.

And now he intends to make a new game with every patreon-related (and annoying) money making mechanic involved.

Its like managing a orphanage, realising its not really making money and deciding to instead become a loan shark now.

To me the biggest problem isn't even that he isn't continuing this game, it's the decision to go into AVN development right after graduation instead of whatever he's been training for. The job market is tight, and right out of school is where most employers get their entry level staff. Taking a year off between HS and Uni or between undergrad and grad school is one thing but taking a year or two off after you graduate before you seek a job in your field could cause serious damage. And it would be a tough decision to explain to family and potential future employers.
OTOH, most entry level positions these days are being given to AI.

I love how everyone is now some financial advisor and life advisor giving the most biased takes on Taks life choices and if his new game will fail or not because your favorite game got canceled lol.
to be fair he started it with the voting shit. He asked for opinions, we are giving it.

First, The Missing Part is my favorite game.
Second, I will most likely buy Tak's new game and play it from the first release.
Third, nothing you said means people should or shouldn't give financial advice. Betting on making a living in AVNs is just as shaky a prospect for a new dev as it is for Tak. Giving people the advice not to bet on making money with an AVN isn't "weird".

It really didn't....
Well, considering it had a release less than a month ago. I would say that being abandoned now. Somewhat qualifies as "out of nowhere" in my eyes.

I mean I was just recommending this on a Reddit post like a week ago, that's a whoopsie now...

(Sorry random guy. If you followed my advice that is and ended up here. MY BAD!)

there were signs before it wasn't going to be a steady development. And with the recent patreon polls it wasn't that big of a surprise...

yeah last few polls were rather concerning before that then I would of said yeah it came out of nowhere. I just didn't expect it before the Spice it up , update. I expected it after a few more updates to be honest it just came sooner than I thought

Yeah, I usually don't really follow every VN I play super closely, and instead just check in on their threads every now and again. So it was a little surprising when you had stuff like this being posted only 9 fucking days ago. And now it's just over.

Ah well, it'll just go down as a "what could have been" for me I guess. RIP Tides.

There's a lot to respond to on this thread so I'll just respond to it generally rather than a few individual comments...

First of all, to those upset, disappointed, angry and frustrated... I don't blame you. I didn't want to put ToS on hold, but due to the reasons outlined in my Patreon posts, I couldn't go forward with it unless it became more of a hobby project. I understand some people believe I could've continued with ToS and still tried to go full-time, but I thought a lot about that and came to the conclusion that isn't viable.

To those people who say trust has been broken... once again, I don't blame you. There's nothing I can say that's going to mend that trust - I'm fully aware of that. I just hope overtime, I can earn some of that trust back if you'll let me.

To those people who say the new AVN will be a generic college game with a horny MC... I'll let the game do the talking once it's released.

To those people criticising me for releasing a poll about it... I respectfully disagree with your points.

To those people who don't believe I can make a living from AVN development... that's fair. There's certainly no guarantees in this industry, but I'm going to give this my all. I also want to reiterate the fact that I'm not throwing away my life for this, I'll land on two feet if this fails, I'll be okay.

I'm happy to answer questions or discuss any of the above points further.

Well, props for coming here facing the disappointment, i feel like i did read the trust part from you already in the past but anyway.

I for my part will surely come back if the new project has the same quality and turns out to be a lasting project and i feel like that will be the case with most people but this will take time.

good luck with the new avn

I am not going to say anything other than what's already been said about your decision. However, I will say this: if you want a bigger audience for your new game, you are missing out by not making it a school harem. It's what most of your new target audience will want, and it's the first thing they will ask for.

If he’s gunning for a BaDIK clone, both the dev and us are in for more disappointment. He won’t steal away any BaDIK fans away from that game.
