I don't think there's any correlation to this behavior and development. there are actually multiple factors, which usually come one with another.
depends if we are talking about the same thing.
you have: 1) making money and sponsors and politics your no.1 priority and working on your game with what time and energy you have left.
and 2) Having passion for your work / actually have solid idea what you want to create and work hard to get it done. and fans and money are side product of success
The connection was seen sooo many times in so many different genres. Like the whole fanbase from one of those popular games ( i think it was midnight paradise, could be a different title) were dissapointed in lack of real progress when author moved his project to steam or something, and progress was not so good.
George r r martin was only ever productive before he was famous. then he spent all his time marketing, and didn't release another relevant book since 2011.
Bethesda was only productive when they worked without asking for money. since they got famous in 2011 they switched politics and re released skyrim in 100 different ways(which mind you modders do anyway for free) and another example of "didn't do anything relevant since 2011" but they market every single small step which may or may not mean anything.
One punch man came out of no where. was success. Since then it was heavily marketed, but to fanbase it's shit: Literaly one man fan puts out projects better than what the actual studio does.
The whole western gaming industry was crippled because politics entered the discussion and it was more important to pass an individual's personal ideology or personal life-style into it, and directors had to listen to directive instead on actual gameplay.
Vtmb bloodline is apparently better from 2004 than from 2025. Like lead designer was fired for caring too much.
what I described is not just about hatefull comments. All described behaviours and actions are like flags that lets you know there is high probability of either failure or delay without purpose.
here's a list of them: 1) marketing politics /one person's views / a diversity quantity as a requisite.
2) making promises and releasing the exact same thing over and over.
3) All this time intensively market and ask for money
4) fire ppl who care about the source material.
reason: developer actively spends time and energy on all said things. I've seen many times ppl saying Nuko is good but lazy. Now imagine how much less he does if he spends time and effort on things that don't actually add to game content.
Saying what the whole community thinks and talks isn't correlated: then why talk at all? Of course that is one of the things that adds to result. It's not necessarily major thing, but it definitely can have weight. If for community it is only acceptable to put out quality results than it this will be an option with less resistance for developer. If politics and card companies hold more importance that they will decide the path of less resistence. There is only so much time and effort developer has.
I consider fanbase for which "release of quality content" = "give me some money" ="ok" a healthy one
"I give promises" or "We chose the best ratio for diversity, because that particular race is the best actor for the role" or "here skyrim 3.3, which added exactly 1 dog fart to the game, give me money"or "I wonder by how many months the author will delay his work this time" or"I posted a hard written article which lets you know I am alive but not mach else" or "lets censor what the developer wants to draw and a buyer wants to pay for" And a fanbase for which any of these are acceptable i consider delusional.
I would give kuru (or kul) sisters as an example of asking for money while working done right, because when they add trial or content it actually means something.
