Commerce raiding against Allied forces was a major problem for nations dependent on maritime transport. Food, raw materials, and everything essential for industrial activity, transported by sea, were at risk… Slow merchant ships with no means of retaliation were seized and eliminated everywhere. In addition to direct damage, commerce raiding also put sea routes at risk, reducing the long-term effectiveness of shipping.
To combat U-boats’ collective attacks like wolf packs, the Allied forces adopted the convoy formation. To counter wolf pack tactics, they deployed escort carriers, patrol aircraft, and escort ships specialized in anti-submarine capabilities. Ships carrying important supplies like fuel and weapons were placed on the inside of the convoy, surrounded by ships carrying general supplies and raw materials like ore. Vertical overlapping was reduced to guard against flanking attacks, and escort ships were stationed on all sides. Their speeds were matched to that of the slowest ship, and ambushes due to leaked information could result in heavy damage. U-boats would submerge and follow convoys during the day, and at night would sail on the surface to approach and attack transport convoys. Sometimes they would even infiltrate the convoys and fire torpedoes. In their heyday, it is said that one in three crew members lost their lives in these relentless attacks on transport convoys.
