TMR-Hiro ADV System Engine Visual Novel Translation Toolkit & Guide
Hello everyone!TMR-Hiro ADV System Engine Visual Novel Translation Toolkit & Guide
I've put together a package containing useful tools for translating visual novels that use the TMR-Hiro ADV System engine.
This package also includes some custom scripts I've made to streamline the translation process.

!!!Let's get started:
Step 1: Unpack the Archive (`1_unpack.bat`)
1. Create a new folder for your work (e.g., `Game_Translation`).
2. Place the original `srp.pac` file, the files from our archive, and also `PacManager.exe` into this folder.
3. Run `1_unpack.bat` (by double-clicking it).
4. Result: A new folder named `unpack` will appear in the `Game_Translation` folder. Inside it, you will find `.txt` files (containing the game text) and possibly other files (like `.var`).
Step 2: Extract Text for Translation (`2_extractor_txt.py`)
1. Place the `2_extractor_txt.py` script into the `Game_Translation` folder (next to the `unpack` folder).
2. Run `2_extractor_txt.py`.
3. Click the "Browse Folder..." button next to "Source TXT Folder:".
4. In the window that opens, select the `unpack` folder created in Step 1 and click "Select Folder".
5. Click the large green "Extract Text" button.
6. Result: Three new files will appear next to the `2_extractor_txt.py` script:
* `_combined_for_translation.txt`: Contains the full text from all `.txt` files along with technical codes/tags. Do not edit this directly for translation!
* `_combined_clean_text.txt`: Contains only the "clean" text (dialogue, descriptions), without most technical codes. Useful for reference.
* `_combined_clean_text_to_translate.txt`: This is your working file for translation! It is a copy of `_combined_clean_text.txt`.
Step 3: Translate the Text
1. Open the `_combined_clean_text_to_translate.txt` file in a text editor that handles UTF-8 well (e.g., Notepad++).
2. Translate the text line by line.
3. VERY IMPORTANT:
* Do not delete or add lines! The number of text lines within each `[filename.txt]` block must remain exactly the same as in the original.
* Do not modify the filename lines (`[filename.txt]`).
* Do not delete the blank lines between file blocks.
4. Save the translated file. You can save it under the same name (`_combined_clean_text_to_translate.txt`) or give it a new one (e.g., `_combined_clean_text_TRANSLATED.txt`), just remember which file contains your translation.
Step 4: Assemble Translation with Tags (`3_combine_txt.py`)
1. Place the `3_combine_txt.py` script into the `Game_Translation` folder.
2. Run `3_combine_txt.py`.
3. The script will try to automatically find the `_combined_for_translation.txt` and `_combined_clean_text.txt` files. Verify that the paths in the first two fields are correct.
4. Click the "Browse..." button next to "Translated File:".
5. Select your translated file from Step 3 (e.g., `_combined_clean_text_to_translate.txt` or `_combined_clean_text_TRANSLATED.txt`).
6. Click the large blue "Assemble Translation" button.
7. Result: A file named `_combined_translated_full.txt` will appear next to the script. It contains the full game text with technical codes, but the text lines have been replaced with your translation.
Step 5: Wrap Long Lines (`4_line_max_122.py`)
1. Place the `4_line_max_122.py` script into the `Game_Translation` folder.
2. Run `4_line_max_122.py`.
3. The script will try to automatically find the input file `_combined_translated_full.txt`. Verify the path.
4. Check the "Max Line Length:" value (default is 122). (Suitable for the Segoe UI font; other fonts might require different numbers!)
5. Click the large orange "Wrap Text Lines" button.
6. Result: A file named `_combined_translated_full_warp.txt` will appear next to the script. In this file, long text lines will be wrapped while preserving the structure (repeating tech lines and character names).
Step 6: Insert Translated Text into Files (`5_inserter_txt.py`)
1. Place the `5_inserter_txt.py` script into the `Game_Translation` folder.
2. Create a new, empty folder inside `Game_Translation` for the finished files, for example, name it `unpack_translated`. DO NOT USE THE ORIGINAL `unpack` FOLDER!
3. Run `5_inserter_txt.py`.
4. The script will try to automatically find the input file `_combined_translated_full_warp.txt`. Verify the path.
5. Click the "Browse Folder..." button next to "Target TXT Folder:".
6. Select the empty folder you created (`unpack_translated`).
7. Click the large blue "Insert Text" button.
8. Result: The `unpack_translated` folder will now contain `.txt` files with your translated and formatted text in Shift-JIS encoding, ready for the game.
Step 7: Copy `.var` Files (Manual Step!)
1. Open the original `unpack` folder (from Step 1).
2. Open the new `unpack_translated` folder (from Step 6).
3. Find all files with the `.var` extension in the original `unpack` folder (or any other files that are not `.txt` but were present in the original folder).
4. Copy these files (`.var` and others) from the original `unpack` folder into the `unpack_translated` folder.
5. Result: The `unpack_translated` folder now contains both the translated `.txt` files and the necessary `.var` (and other) files.
Step 8: Prepare for Repacking
1. MAKE A BACKUP of the original `unpack` folder if you haven't already!
2. Delete or rename the original `unpack` folder (e.g., to `unpack_original_backup`).
3. Rename the `unpack_translated` folder (which contains the translated `.txt` and copied `.var` files) to `unpack`.
4. Result: You now have an `unpack` folder ready to be packed back into `srp.pac`.
Step 9: Pack the Archive (`6_pack.bat`)
1. Ensure the `6_pack.bat` batch file is in the `Game_Translation` folder (next to the new `unpack` folder).
2. Run `6_pack.bat`.
3. Result: A new file named `srp_new.pac` will appear in the `Game_Translation` folder. This is your archive with the translated game!
Completion:
Now you can replace the original `srp.pac` in the game's folder with the new one (don't forget the backup of the original!) and enjoy the results of your hard work!
