Using established IP's

One itch I've always wanted to scratch is a game set in an established IP world, such as Star Wars/Lord of the Rings/ect.

While I HAVE seen games like this, it's more common to see parodies or people just steering clear altogether.

Are there risks with using establish IP's for your games? Why do I not see more of these kinds of games?

If the IP world is really popular, such as Star Wars, then you will get a DMCA claim soon enough and your Patreon page will be banned.
If the IP world is relatively niche, then it is probably fine. Check out "Four elements trainer" as an example. IP holders don't care about it.

Is Mortze of The Warrior's Heart just taking the risk or is enough changed about that to keep them free and clear?
He didn't use existing characters from the canon series, labeled it as fan-fiction, put some legal disclaimers and, more importantly, offered the game for free since day 1 while working on other projects, so it would be hard to prove he has actually benefited from that title, with him already being an established artist way before it (obviously it could be argued that he used the game for self-advertising purposes, but their patron numbers didn't significatively ramp up). That said, it would only take a cease and desist warning to take everything down. I guess the game just never reached the proper circles.

If I remember correctly, they had problems with that in the past.
No that I'm aware of. Had he ever had any problem with Disney, I can assure you the game wouldn't be still available on Tora's patreon

I remember a big star wars themed game having to change a lot of things to keep afloat, not sure if it's that one, tho.
