Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception (MoD) is a VN that comes with strings attached. The first is that reading Utawarerumono: Prelude to the Fallen (PttF) before, is likely to increase your enjoyment, and immersion of MoD. The second is that this title, combined with Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth (MoT), make one single story. When you finish MoD, you are supposed to move on to MoT, or be left with the mother of all "cliffhangers".
Positive:
- Great Art style - If we are talking about traditional art styles, this is one of my favorites in a VN.
- OST has both quantity and quality. If that intro isn't epic, then I don't know what epic is (actually I do, something like Morrowind).
- Many memorable characters - And some members of the previous cast (PttF), also take the spotlight in this one.
- Very nice slice of life (SoL) - It's a staple of the series. The comedy is always subjective, but the SoL of Utawarerumono is top tier.
- Epic fantasy - It has the duration (hours), the scope (an empire, and many ramifications), the subject matter (fate of humanity) is adequate too, and there are 3 titles (sort of a trilogy). I think it qualifies for the classification.
- Excellent worldbuilding - Considering they are setting up things for the next title, this was a given, but it's still very good.
Neutral:
- Combat (tactics RPG) is a bit better than to PttF but it's still not great, unfortunately.
Negative:
- This is bordering being an unfinished product. When I read this I already knew it was supposed to end abruptly, and I'd had to read the next one, but that didn't soften the blow. Cutting a product in 2 like they did here, is a terrible practice that needs to disappear. Stories need a beginning, and an ending, even if they are part of a bigger picture.
Score: Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception is an 8/10, a great VN, and a passable videogame. The only thing you need to know other than that, is that this title doesn't stand on its own, you are supposed to read MoT after this one. Treat them as one VN, and read PttF before, if at all possible.
