VN Ren'Py Vinland [HuitiemeGame] - Preview and demo

Hi everyone!

I've been on this forum for a few months now, and after seeing a lot of good and great games (and not so good nor great ones as well, let's be honest), I've wanted to try my luck as well. I've thus been learning to use Daz and Renpy since last March, and I've concocted a VN with, I hope, compelling story and characters. I've just finished the last render of the prologue a few hours ago, and even though it took 4 months to release this short update, I'm positive that the next ones will come sooner (and be bigger).

I'm posting in the general section because as proud of myself as I am, this cannot be considered a game yet, a beta at most. And what do we do with beta versions? We give them for free to be beta tested! I hope you will like it and if you don't, please tell me why. If you do, tell me why as well

Anyway, let's cut to the chase.



The plot:
The story takes place in 1008 CE. Greenland is celebrating the departure of a seafarers crew to Vinland, a new land promising numerous riches to those brave enough to conquer it. The expedition is led by Thorfinn Karlsefni and his wife, a couple of rich merchants from Iceland, and accompanied by Eirik the Red's children. You play a young peasant who initially came only to cheer on the heroes and who, through a (fortunate) chain of events, is enrolled into the crew to discover Vinland.

You can name the MC as you wish, but know I'm personally partial to "Olaf"

The (lady) protagonists:
Freydís

Freydís Eiríksdóttir, 25, is the bastard daughter of Eirik the Red, paramount chieftain of all Greenland. She's a big girl (for you) that loves nothing more than laughing, fighting and eating. Show her that you hold the soul of a true Viking, and she might like you fine.

Gudrid

Gudrid Thorbjanardóttir, 25, is the wife of Thorfinn Karlsefni, leader of the Vinland expedition. Daughter of a chieftain herself, she left Iceland at a young age to study in Roma. As a young adult, she started her own trading company all around southern Europa before coming back to take care of her father and marry the first son of Eirik the Red, Thorstein. Thorstein died soon after their wedding, and Gudrid remarried with Thorfinn.

Adelaïde

Adelaïde, 19, is a sla... servant from the Kingdom of France. She's been serving lady Gudrid since she was but a child and her only friends are Zaina and her. The poor girl can only speak French. Fortunately for her, both Gudrid and Zaina can speak French as well.

Zaina

Zaina, 23, is a sla... servant from Andalucía. She serves lady Gudrid and is very protective of Adelaïde. Zaina has never been seen smiling, and she wears a constant scowl around Norsemen. Rumors say she prefers the company of women.

Jokes aside, I always like medieval settings, as it is really a breath of fresh air from all the modern day games. The characters looks good so... Good luck with your project. I might test the demo later

Vinland Saga is clearly one of my favorite manga and an inspiration as well
It was weird to "create" characters that appear on the manga but with totally different personality, especially Thorfinn.

Each girl will have her own route with different paths and you can play a romantic guy or a complete asshole. As for Thorfinn... you could very well decide to do the decent thing and not go for his wife, you know

Don't worry, it's a "yet". I see you're a fan of The Deluca Family, this game has been an inspiration (as well as a few others) and I'm trying for a similar pace instead of immediate sexual gratification

Among the planned content, you will find: vanilla sex, light BDSM, true lesbian (no dick involved), FFM (some dick involved), MMF (too many dicks involved), etc.

Just one thing, the font and UI sometimes blend in together when there's a white area below, I recommend using stroke and drop shadow for all text just in case.

Very interesting. Looks very promising. Just don't make the MC too delicate, small and cutesy. These were rough times, and medieval Greenland was a very harsh place to be. People who weren't physically tough as nails simply died.

The place where an expedition of this kind would have started from would logically be one of the settlements in Eystribyggð such as Dyrnes or (more probably) Herjólfsnes (where the real Guðríður Þorbjarnardóttir lived for a time). No need to invent a village, let alone one with the name of a glacier. Little enough is known about these real settlements of the time, you still have free reign.
Small point: Houses in medieval Greenland and Iceland were typically built too low to break your legs by falling off the roof. The reasons for the low and slightly dug-down building style were a) lack of wood useable as building material (remember, this isn't Scandinavia) and b) conservation of heat.

The MC should not be too delicate, but I don't want to go the full "viking cliché" route either. There are mainly two main ways to go: warrior or scholar. Of course, the warrior path should lead to a more physical MC than the scholar one.

I'm not at all from the area where this story takes place (I'm French), but I dug around to find as much information as I could, and I thought that using the name of a real settlement would "force" me to be more accurate than I could regarding the village, clothes, etc. That's why I went with a made up name to anchor the story in a fantasy setting. But maybe it was unnecessary. I mean, "Hafnarjokull" sounded good enough to me, but I must admit that "Herjolfsnæs" isn't bad to the ear either. And it has the greater advantage of being a real historical place. If people likes the story enough to look for the real historical facts, I'd be happy enough
Hmm, I might be changing it for the foreseeable future.

If you're familiar already with the Saga of Erik the Red (and I've no doubt you are), you'll see I've taken a few liberties with the historical parts, so I hope you won't hold it against me

Regarding houses, there's a hint about Einar's leg if you've reached the "bad ending". It's subtle, but there's a reason behind the broken leg story. I obviously cannot explain any further without getting all spoilery.

I really like the historical setting! I recall trying some Viking themed adult games in the past, but I can't even remember if they were just themed or actually historical. Probably not. Anyways, some other things I liked:
- Nice varied cast of characters
- The humour
- Likeable protagonist
- Player choices
- Great choice of music
- That I suspect you took some inspiration in making a bad end ...interesting.

I don't think I've ever seen a 3DCG adult game with such over the top expressions, but they somehow fit in perfectly with the humorous tone of the game.

One thing I would change is the font of the text, which makes it a bit harder to read. It's fine for the UI and Menu.

- The humour

- That I suspect you took some inspiration in making a bad end ...interesting.

The bad ending *may* remind people of a certain heavy something game ;p Even though it's less... final. I'm still nowhere near that level. Regarding the humor, I'm glad you lot seem to appreciate it, I wasn't sure my lame ass jokes would land

. I understand it's kinda hard to read at time, mainly because the text is not outlined for all dialogs (but I'm working on it, following redknight00 advice. The reason behind such a choice is kinda spoilery, but I'm using different fonts for different languages. Because I don't want to live in a fantasy world where everyone speak English. There will be French, Spanish, Arabic and Native American language throughout the game. Changing the font for each makes it easier for players to follow what happens
