Visual novels and content (sex/nudity etc.)

Hi all,
Im in the very early stages if a possible first project. Im starting small, but only in the planning portion.

With that said, I know that this site is more aimed at "porn" games, but im looking to make something of a more kinetic/ linear story with light nudity/ sex (if any). Focusing on story more than sex etc.

How are those recieved in this community?

Jokes aside, what type of story are you writing? If there is no fappability, you better be sure about your writing chops. A contemporary high school setting where some dude lives out his day to day life would be boring as shit without porn. If there is something interesting going on in the setting and a nice hook, you can probably get some people into it. Honestly though, at that point, you are pretty much competing with professional writers instead of amateur porn devs.

About as well as you'd expect if you're here asking. Here's a search of all games with no sexual content sorted by views so you can see the most popular games. Honestly, an unpopular opinion is to just make a "slow burn" game and blueball your player base to infinity if you don't want sexual content. There's quite a few popular and successful games that promise sex but still have none after a few years of development.

It's something I've toyed with for a while, centered around music (characters and situations inspired by various songs).

In short, it's centered around lost friendships/relationships possibly being rekindled, deals with adult themes like depression, drugs, etc. Some comedic relief. I don't mind sex, but when it's put in proper context, not just for fap material.

Edit: also im doing this as a hobby, not a job or way to make money. Just for a creative outlet more than anything. I just want to get a few ideas on what people generally expect from vn's that focus on story over porn/sex.

Sounds interesting enough. It seems a bit heavy though. Drama like this probably takes more skill to write than some anime-esque story with head pats or some sci-fi triller.

Anyways, there was one game in recent memory that might be of interest to you - Scarlet Spire. It has some GREAT visuals as far as I can tell from the preview pics. The overview has quite a bit of grammatical errors, so I don't know how good the writing actually is. They have 13 patrons for $43/month.

As Mimir says though, slow burning people to oblivion is actually a valid strategy lol. Just dangling the prospect of tapping that ass will get people invested. That seems artificial and counter productive to what I think you are attempting to write though.

Since you are not opposed to sexual themes and depicting sex where it's appropriate for the plot, I don't see too much of an issue. Realistic depiction of relationships are sorely lacking in adult VNs on this site. Just avoiding the "no sexual content" tag will be sufficient to keep the attention of a huge swath of people that might not have given you the time of day otherwise.

So, just a thought to digest from a passing stranger - atm of my posting there were 19k people online. Fiddle with that number, using your own judgement, step back and say how many thousands came here NOT for porn (zero thousands by my guess). Sure, devs and inbetweens are among there too. For that reason not everyone are here exclusively for porn. Decide by what volume of users the"community" is defined and you will have some leverage for prying an answer for your question.

Well, one character in the story is a prostitute, but she's in the story for far more than just having sex scenes etc.

The story is heavy at times, but it's all based on love and redemption, dealing with issues etc. I just don't want the main focus to be on sex/ porn.
