I’m moving into a dorm this year and won’t have room for a separate compy other than an ultrabook for taking notes. I just got a pretty powerful desktop replacement that I’ll use for gaming and CAD, and I’m wondering if anyone can give me suggestions for a lightweight VM to avoid getting burnt by viruses again.

I will recommend using a virtualbox windows 7 machine for any smutty games you would want to play. If windows 7 doesn't do you good, use a windows 10 virtual machine and just remove all of the bloatware and remove all of the telemetry junk and you'll do well.
