It's basically due to the amount of layers of virtualization involved. The site runs an instance of the Python interpreter compiled to WASM in a browser sandbox, within which we run the Ren'Py engine. As a result, the engine's access to the host OS and hardware is very heavily neutered: no file system access, no arbitrary networking, no visibility into other running processes, built-in mitigation against CPU exploits such as Spectre, etc.

In theory, it'd be possible to use zero-day exploits to bypass the sandboxing but practically speaking it's about as safe as you can get without rolling your own sandbox or VM while being significantly more convenient than those since mods, walkthroughs, etc. are a click or two away.
