Wasteland Guardians
Version 0.1 Review
Playtime: About 2 hours
DISCLAIMER: Due to the early state of the game, I do not give out 5 star reviews until a game has proven consistency and has been given continued effort from the developer. This review will be out of a possible maximum of 4 stars until a couple more updates have been released.
Quick Review Breakdown:
3/4 Stars
+Enjoyable experience from start to finish
-Writing was decent, but had consistent grammar issues that need addressed.
+Gameplay is standard VN, with some QTE that did not detract from story
+Sexual Content was limited due to early state, but enough to set expectations towards positive future experiences.
As a big fan of the "post apocalyptic wasteland" genre of stories, this immediately caught my eye. After playing through all content currently in the 0.1 first release of the game, I was pleasantly surprised by this title, and am looking forward to future updates on it.
The writing and dialogue weren't exactly the most mindblowing or enthralling thing to read through, being quite simple at times, but it wasn't a negative experience reading through and I didn't feel annoyed by the writing, it was just fairly average.
However, that said, the writing loses a point from the overall score due to the numerous grammar issues it had. I know this is from someone who does not speak English as a first language, but it's still being presented to an English audience, so having a second person go through and correct the more obvious translation errors would have gone a long way towards readability. Overall, I still understood what was trying to be said through the "broken English" and I don't feel like the overall experience was degraded as a result of it, but it was consistent and common enough from start to finish that it really should have been addressed before release.
In terms of gameplay elements, it's a standard visual novel, and currently it appears to be a kinetic novel, although it's really too early to tell if any of the choices made in the first couple of hours would have had significant impact further on. That said, there is choice here that does seem to impact relationships with other characters and how specific events play out, however not enough to feel like a replay is worth my time to see other outcomes. The game has QTE prompts, but they hold no challenge and are more narrative than consequential. Certain QTE events do have direct narrative impact, and did not feel intrusive. Overall, no complaints with the gameplay's current state, and I think the minimal QTE added more than it typically does in most stories.
Obviously, this is a porn game at the end of the day, so how does the sexual content hold up? Well, its very minimal. There's also not a lot to this game. But so far there does seem to be enough to give us an idea of what to expect in the future. Choice did seem to play a role in the availability of the sexual content, but again, it's too early to expect much from it. In my reviews, if it doesn't present itself negatively, then it's a positive for the review. Thus, for the current state, this earns it another point.
In total, this gives the game a 3/4 star rating for the version 0.1 release. In the future, once the developer has released a few more updates, the final grading point will be consistency of updates over time and consistency of quality across updates.
I look forward to seeing more from this one!
