At the time this review is written, the rating is actually a 7/10, it is an average score I give to the two chapters.
Before I start, here are some disclaimers:
This is in no way an objective review...and I know no review is objective, but this one will be even more so than usual.
Why?
Well, I am this artist's Patron, the highest of all the creators I ever pledge, and I am also on good speaking terms with the artist himself...
So yeah, I will try to be subjective, but no promises.
As the title suggests, Wet Nightmares is a VN "game" that is something in between the horror and erotic genre.
Now I won't go into a discussion about "Does VN with no interaction counts as games?"...I will rather have a discussion about how Taiwan is a country over that, if this is in the "Adult Games" section, I will count it as games.
The premise:
You are Joseph (one thing I have to say is the game never tells you what is your name, or I simply forget. But I have to check the backlog to know), a writer with a fuck up personality who live along in a forest cabin, (like most great American writers) in presumably The United States.
One day as you are along in the woods struggling to finish your magnum opus, shit went fucky around you...
It starts with a nightmare follow by serval paranormal activities and with his self-isolation plus a completely screwed psychological clock. The protagonist is driven into borderline madness.
And at your peak panic, a mysterious girl knocks on your cabin door and plead to stay in your place for a night, and being the disturbed man with a twisted personality, you basically force her to perform sexual acts on you in exchange for her stay...while the world around you went even crazier either due to you slowly losing your mind, or it is literally haunted...
The presentation:
The set up is full of potential, and the execution is good, initially.
Now despite many other reviews below this one has said, the horror elements are somehow cliche. But since I am not the biggest horror fan, I can appreciate it's effectiveness...and really if you come to an erotica to find the master of the horror genre, you come to the wrong place.
The first nightmare part is probably the more effective one, since the VN nature means you literally can't move but to stare directly at...it, something you can't really make clear but have some creepy undertone like it is going to jumpscare you when it gets the chance.
But the rest is not as effective, sadly. Probably is because it peaks way too fast, the first nightmare is already very good, the rest is comparably tame.
Plus as I said, you don't come to an erotica to find the master of horror. So a lot of them are actually quite tame after that first nightmare. I do remember one of them is, okay spoiler alert:
The Artstyle:
But horror is only half of this VN have to offer, what is the rest, which is probably what we actually care about?
Well...it's good.
Like, do you expect a guy who literally pays the artist for it to say so otherwise?
The animation is rather nice, most CGs are drawn from a first-person perspective, and this girl's design...oh boy.
Before this VN even exist, there are already more than a hundred pictures of this ghost girl floating around the internet...and call me a simp or a degenerate all you want because that is why we are here isn't it?
I pledge the artist simply because I like her design.
For me, the game is secondary, it is all about this ghost girl, and always has been.
Despite how good it is, there is still serval very big flaws about them as a whole.
First of all, there are just too few of them, even after chapter two rolls out, I can still only count the amount of porn-related CG in one hand...and, on yeah, spoiler alert.
So, yeah. The CGs have great quality, shame there is too few of them...despite I got my collection as a Patron, but I still hope there can be more of them in the actual VNs.
The Story & Writing:
A simple premise, but rather unique in the adult game genre.
I can count the amount of adult game with horror elements on one hand, and most if not all of them boil down to monsters rape girls you control in the dark.
This one, however, puts you in the shoes of a guy that is disturbed by either his own imagination or paranormal activity around him, and since he is not really a good guy, he decides to take it on the first girl he met.
But despite the uniqueness of this setup, I can't help but think the writing fell a bit flat after chapter one...now I am no master writer, literally.
I have great tolerance for bad writing, and really nothing is badly written in this VN.
Cliche? Maybe, but it is fine on its own.
But Chapter 2 is all it went worse...now I really don't want to be too critical because I am on good terms with the artist/dev.
Even then, this chapter 2 still let me quite disappointed.
It is way shorter than Chapter one and features a shorter story and CG...plus both the horror and erotic elements fell rather short here.
Now, as a Patron, I know the dev is quite busy in October and might suffer a self-inducing crunch since he has other projects to work on.
But it doesn't excuse how little content there is in it...
chapter two has some major shortcomings compared to the first chapter, there are some untranslated Spanish in the script (the artist is Mexican), the UI is screwed, and the grammar is kinda bad (although I won't complain too much about that since look at my own grammar here).
But the worst of all is the lack of CGs and story progressions.
Now he does tell me he is planning to fix it gradually and fortunately is rather cool about my complaints
, unlike a certain Alex Mahan. I do make some suggestions to the dev to "recycle" his previous hundred of arts of the girl into the game to save time.
For now, all we can do is wait for it, soon™.
In conclusion:
This is a mix bag, the first chapter shows a great premise and setup.
But despite my very biased opinion towards the artist as a whole, I can't help but feel disappointed about how this chapter 2 is.
TL;DR
A VN feature both horror and erotic elements, with a simple premise with great potential. A fine start that features decent enough horror, a screw-up protagonist, and a mysterious girl that makes me want to simp.
Although things startup good enough in the first chapter, the second chapter fell short in comparison, lacking in many departments compare to the first.
