What do you associate with HTML tagged games?

I'm interested in hearing your opinion on this. When you're working on your projects, ideas come to you all the time - so I write them down for later use. Currently I'm busy with my ongoing game, but recently I've had some ideas for what comes after, that went into a realtime rendered interactive direction. I would want to continue developing games that are played directly in the browser, so naturally a few questions came up regarding visibility of such a project.

Do you automatically associate HTML games with story formats like Twine?
If you don't like Twine-style games: Do you avoid HTML tagged games, or even filter them out?
Would you expect to find different type of games under that tag?

Discuss.

What do you think made you pick others over any random HTML game? Pure chance, better ratings or something else?

Well i can't speak for him, but in my case, it's because HTML games tends to not have any animations.

I can't play H-games without animations, barring a few exceptions.

Degrees of Lewdity is the only one i've played and enjoyed because all sex scenes are animated

I am not really interested in HTML games.
However, if the tags and preview images appeal to me, I might give them a try.

I am also creating adult fictions, and wanna try html stuffs for a while.

Interesting. So, are you actually looking through HTML games on occasion? Or is it more like you don't bother because most are the same formula anyway?

I guess I just am under the impression people just don't bother as soon as they see the the [ HTML ]
Not trying to sound whiny or anything, just trying to understand how one could communicate clearly that a hypothetical HTML game is not your average Twine clicker with stats grinding.
Just theoretically, say you'd have a game that would be basically on-par with your average high-tier Ren'Py game but it's made in HTML. Everyone can tell, that game would have less exposure without a smart PR strategy than if it was produced in Ren'Py.[/HTML]

In my case, i do check them out, but if i see there's no animations, i check out. I might make an exception though, if your game is a parody of something i like (i.e. The Legend of Zelda, Tomb Raider, Sailor Moon, etc), but in the very least, it must have some images. I can't get excited with just text alone.

doing the same repetitive tasks over and over again, not sure why devs think this is fun to play or maybe its just the fact that its easy to code or something

it works better in Renpy due to the skip already read text feature but even then its not exactly fun to repeat the same dialogue/tasks over and over
I myself filter out sandbox tag for exactly that reason, so I know how you feel.

Thank you for the input. So clear messaging on gameplay in promotion material should be a priority. Actually self-evident if I think about it but yeah, maybe more of a focus on that would be a good idea.

Two things comes to mind which stand at odds with one another.
First, I don't wanna play this it's probably trash. Second, oh wait my favourite animation was from an HTML game (Busty JK Teaches Pint-Sized Compensated Dating!).

I never ever associated HTML games to "story format", and can't remember a single one of the few HTML games I tried that make me feel like it would fit in that category.

I filtered them out a long time ago.

I know that there's exceptions, but they all look and feel cheaper that the cheapest RPG Maker or Ren'Py game. The fact that a really large majority of them use pictures/videos stolen here and there do not help to make them looks like something more than a low effort attempt.
It's a bias, I know, but this feeling of cheapness tend to erase all the efforts that can possibly have been put in the story or game mechanisms.

Usually just bad games with porn gifs. The only one I could recommend would be incubus city because of how deep it is in and the NG+.

Also for some reason a lot of them are these trans-themed games that have no business getting the amount of likes and 5-star reviews that they have and I assume they're being brigaded by some trans discordgroup.

They usually have real porn images, GIFs and videos which is pretty bad.

well, i can say that the images on the posts of html games intimidate me. i like a good story, but a flat-colored screen with dozens of lines of text on it keeps me away from the game. here are a few examples:

I'm sure there are some great games in this style and I'll like them if I try them. but I'm staying away from html games for now when the list of games I need to play is so long.
