Browsing this site for a three years now, I begin to wonder what's origin of this site? Google has it's origin story, 4chan, Facebook and other forums, but as I was searching for a proper article about F95Zone, I couldn't find any. What's your story with this site? How do you come here? Maybe you could hellp me to shed some light on the site's legacy and complete the puzzle peace by peace.

An obscure Russian game named Son of a bitch brought me here back in the days. Horrible translation and the only place with some half-decent people who could help used to be here. I believe that game and similar ones are actually responsible for the 'machine translated' tag

Before F95, it was the wild west. There was no central "hub", Steam nor Itch.io officially allowed adult games, and the few hubs that existed were mostly random niche fetishist forums. There were a couple subreddits for adult games, but it mostly just advertised the same few games every week. You could rarely expect to discover something new on it.

I only knew of two decent ways to find games, HGG on 8chan, and searching on Patreon. It was much easier to find adult content on Patreon back then, but still wasn't ideal. The "timed release", or "Early Access" model wasn't widely used yet. In many cases, you had to pay just to try the game. It was incredibly easy to get scammed, and even I paid for a random "game" which was basically just a modeling engine that offered a handful of animations and 3D models.

It was incredibly difficult to find new games, even whilst using HGG and Patreon. Everything was word of mouth, you basically just needed to discover some random dude make a random post about some obscure game on a reddit/image board/forum post and hope his taste in games wasn't shit.

I don't know for certain where I discovered F95. Chances are that it was from someone on 8chan or a subreddit mentioning it in a comment.

But I believe there is more to that. Like, I believe, this site wasn't created, when early global internet was a thing. I think, even mods doesn't know the whole picture. But, I believe, F95Zone deserves its place in history, or it will be gone one day, like a Library of Alexandria.

I don't think there is any soap opera story here, since the user F95 used to share adult games on other websites I think you can boil down the whole decision to "Fuck it, I'll just make my own website" and also decided to name it his "zone" hence the title.

What has been on my mind for a while though is what are F95 or Sam or the other staff into ?

Vanilla, Incest, 3D SFM videos with My Little Pony characters ?
Come on you don't own, manage and maintain one of the most popular adult gaming communities without having a few fun weird kinks yourself.

So if anyone can share the juicy gossip I think the owner's fetishes should count as historical data for the site no ? :ROFLMAO:

Ah, InfinityChan... that sure brings back memories. I wonder what Hotwheels is up to these days.

I personally saw it mentioned on 4chan, IIRC. Prior to that it was as you said - word of mouth, and hoping you don't get scammed/phished/virus'd when trying to play a new game. Every one of them was like a black box, you never knew what you'd find. Like don't get me wrong, it's great having something like F95 which collates games and has tag-based organization, makes it super easy to find whatever you're looking for. But there was a genuine Wild West feeling back in the day... maybe it's just nostalgia glasses but there was a certain romance to it all, like you were exploring an untrodden path every time you got your paws on a new game...

I suppose it's like with everything on the internet: as time goes by things get more accessible and convenient, but that initial feeling of raw wonder and excitement tends to wear off.

Back then, where there was no accessible pages like "Last Updates" with multifilter and ignore option, I used to go on the main page and open every game, title of which was interesting, just to search for screenshots. It took a lot of time, and I agree, it seemed like a searching for a treasure. When you find it, it was very joyful.

However, I prefer current accessibility. Not as fluent and nitpicking as VNDB, but a great addition.

The wild thing about F95zone to me when I first found it was that they didn't use any bullshit file hosting like rapidgator. Downloading 15 parts of the rar with throttled 20kb/s speeds and waiting 15 seconds after clicking free download... That was the usual experience when pirating anything from some random site generally.

You forgot the 1 hour delay between two downloads.

This being said, such sites works that way for purely commercial reasons. They want you to register, and therefore pay, to use their service. And, to be sure that they'll have files for you to download (since there's so many competitors without such restrictions), they usually have a sponsoring program, paying few cents for each file downloaded that come from a partner; either because uploaded by one, or because coming from the partner site.
