Seeking Which are your best recommendations for 2D (preferably pixel art, but not mandatory) sidescrollers?

As the title says, I'm looking for good 2D sidescroller/metroidvania games.
Playing SiNiSistar (https://f95zone.to/threads/sinisistar-v3-0-0-uu.36011/), awakened my slumbering love for those games, a remembrance of my preteen years, I suppose
Which ones do you recommend? I'd prefer them to pose at least a tiny bit of a challenge, I'm a sucker for hard, unforgiving games. I don't mind dark/heavy scenes, as you might imagine from what I recently played.
