Which Art Style Do You Prefer The Most?

What is Your Opinion?

  • 2D unique art style with beautiful characters.

  • 3D unique characters with decent rendering.

  • Doesn't matter, as long as the story and writing is good.

Good Day everybody, first of all, I am not a developer(yet). However, I'm working on a decently long erotic action-comedy VN right now. (It might take up to 2 years before its first release cause I'm still learning about coding so, sorry no spoilers) And I have my fellow artist who is, pretty good at 2D arts and 3D rendering (At least I believe so) and we would like to know which art style the majority would prefer. We could have picked one ourselves but I like both styles and my dude seems to take the almost same amount of time for both styles and he doesn't have a favorite either, so we would love to know your opinion (hopefully some other devs too). My thanks in advance.

[ I am new to this site, so if this thread isn't in the right place or there is already a similar thread exists, feel free to relocate or delete the thread. thanks.]

For me, it's the third option. I don't really even care whether or not the "story" is top-tier. For me, it's more about whether or not the game includes things I like or if the mechanics are pretty decent. I even played a few HTML games and enjoyed them even though I skipped over downloading the image packs that are included. If the game has content that I'm into and it's executed well, then I'll play it. By executed well, I mostly mean whether or not it seems that one part is basically just shoe-horned in for the sake of adding an extra tag and increasing the chance of people finding it. For instance, being bi, I also gay content. I don't really care whether or not it's there since I'm into girls, too, but if a game has the "gay" tag, I feel annoyed if there's, like, one dude option thrown in who's naked at one point... for all of five seconds. I like all of the content proposed to have at least near equal rep. Or, if a game has a long, winded description about all the stuff you can do and all the romance options, but it's your typical generic "all girls look the same but with different hair" type of game, complete with a grind fest you need to struggle through just to see a single nipple.

Buuuut, if I was forced to chose which one I enjoy more (for the sake of actually answering the question) it would be 2D. I feel like the creator has more freedom to form the exact image that they had in mind. I'm not interested in 2D images mined from the internet, though. I mean specifically images that are created by whichever dev/team made the game.

Good luck with your project~

I could have chosen the answer 3, but for me it's more :
4) Interesting one, whatever the style itself.

Your question said it, it's an "art style". And every style can be good enough when it come to art, as long as it's interesting and it convey something. There's games with amazing CG, but lifeless one, and there's games with basic CG, but that make you feel something ; and the second ones are always better, at least for me.

I hate daz renders with a passion (those faces creep me out) and I've seen my fair share of bad 2DCG so honestly idc if its 2D or 3D its more so a question of "is it good?" If a game has art I'm going to be looking at it so it's not really something I can ignore. Take Elana Champion of Lust for example.

It's art style is downright gorgeous. The story could be absolute crap and it would still have a leg to stand on. Thankfully the story in it is actually good.

I definitely don't speak for the majority of the community here as lots of people love daz though so keep that in mind.

If I had to pick I’d usually prefer good 3D over 2D, but as many have said, the story is more important. As long as the art is good, the style doesn’t matter if it’s going with a good story. Really bad art can ruin even a good story in some cases but even then, a good story can carry bad art.

So pick whichever works best for your story honestly. There are a lot of development factors to think about so if you think either will work pick the one that is best for development. For example if making renders with Daz, some renders can take a while so could your artist be doing other things while it’s rendering? Things like that are worth taking into account for small teams where time is a big factor.

Well as many threads ago, art is a subjective matter. What one may find pleasing and attractive may not be to the next person. I have no issue with 2d/3d art. 2D art can look just as horrible as 3d art, and vice versa. I'm more interested as to how creative a dev is with the tools they are given.

TBQH, I'm partial with the HoneySelect models over DaZ ones. But yeah, I'd play the game if it has an interesting story, and the english doesn't look like it's been butchered and sloppily shoved through a grinder; regardless if it's a 2d or a 3d one.

I'm pretty sure there should be both 3D-only and 2D-only players. But I also believes the majority of the xxx games enthusiasts doesn't care about that as long as the images looks good. There are great 3D models with amazing render, bad model with bad renders, and a mix of one with another. There are great 2D illustrations with great scenes, bad illustrations awfully stamped on bad scenes, and again a mix.

3D models are a great choice if you don't have a good 2D artist on your team since you basically use assets inside a character generator. Bad point here is that you need good hardware to come up with high quality renders quickly.

I'm fine with either so long as there's actual effort put into the images, especially backgrounds. Something like Milfy City, Man of the House and Dreams of Desire is what I mean in terms of 3D and while Honey Select models can look good, the backgrounds often end up looking pretty mediocre since it's just the places taken from the Honey Select game itself. With no shadows, no shading, no kind of effects it makes the models look like crap. So backgrounds are pretty important for me.

In terms of 2D I have pretty low standards, I like most styles so long as the characters don't look like ugly, tired hags where they all have bags under the eyes, including the 20 year olds lol. I also don't like when a game has too many styles from too many artists that don't make an effort to make their art styles resemble at least a little bit. It can get pretty jarring when the protagonist looks like they're 20 in one style and 50 in another style.

Daz3D only for me. I just don't find 2D characters erotic whatsoever. It's a shame too, because there might be some really good stories in the 2D world, but I will never know because I just can't take a cartoon seriously. I'd be better off with an erotic novel and my imagination. I actually wish F95 had 2 distinct forums for each.

For me the art is the most important part. next a good story. but i could spend all day looking at the art and talent of the creators. The same would go for great story but with out the art I find it hard to engage in the story.

I can give a few examples - when Borderlands Game came out that art style just was awe inspiring also how they used it in the gener of their game it had been done before but that is the one that caught my eye. also I think 2d over 3d has more caught my eye I think over time as it seems that in a lot of games you are seeing the same avatars used over and over with some change but mostly the same, but when it first was done it was like awesome. Like Icstor games, Freeloading Family, Date My Daughter, Man of the House, My Cute Roommate, Project Hot Wife, Sisterly Lust, Summertime Saga, Something Unlimited, and I could go on and on.

But man it has got to be the art then story.

That is just my opinion

I prefer high quality real porn, after that comes 3D porn and only last 2D. However, sometimes i get what could be called uncanney valley. Its not quite the same, it just means that for example vaginas just don't look quite right. In those situations i tend to prefer very simplistic 2D art or even just very simplistic 3D vaginas. Both let my imagination fill in the blanks, making it seem more realistic which can turn me on. Lots of vaginas in porn games would look just fine in real life or as 2D art.

So in porn games, less realistic vaginas are often much better and can even seem more realistic.

And i really don't like massive boobs and other stuff like that. I want closer to realism.

Also, camera angles in porn games are really important. Sometimes there can be really good sex scene but if camera angle is not what i like, it can be completely waste for me. I want to see females from the front, and the beautiful love boxes between their legs - unless its one of those uncanney valley vaginas.

If it's 2D, there has to be some skill, some consistent style, and something that makes the characters "sexy". If it's 3d, then character design, skin textures, lighting, facial expressions, clothing and poses all have to be on point. Otherwise the art can look "flat" and uninspired. Particularly if you recycle characters(not just the general 3d models but the actual specific look) from other games. In that case you had better have all the graphics sharp, and come up with an original story and some hot scenes. I like to see variety in people's body types, ethnicities and ages. And if you do have a nonwhite character, please use something other than or in addition to, one of the 3 or 4 "stock" models that show up in a dozen different games("black woman with frizzy hair"). Proportions can be a bit exaggerated, but please no knee length cocks the width of Pringles cans, or boobs the size of beach balls.
