Why are RPGs so popular?

I'm referring to the games that are top down, much like what the first pokemon games were.
Is it just an easier way of conveying a story instead of drawing out scenes? Also what do the vewiers get out of it? Control over the storyline?
I just don't understand their popularity in 2018.

What sort of games are you comparing them to? Are we talking about porn RPGs or RPGs in general?

I'm sure some of the people who like RPG porn games actually like RPG gameplay, with things like map exploration, turn-based combat, and whatever.

There does seem to be this idea out there that the turn-based RPG as a genre is outdated. Commercially speaking (non-porn commercial games, I mean), you don't actually see them around too often whether in 3D or not--sorta like what happened to the point-and-click adventure game genre. I tend to think it's just a matter of personal preference. Indie game development being so prolific these days, it's hard to see any particular genre fading away completely like the point-and-click did.

Honestly, part of it is probably nostalgia. At least some of the games deliberately emulate the styles of older RPGs, and even the ones that don't will sorta carry on a bunch of conventions of the genre. It helps having RPGMaker and Wolf RPG running around--you wouldn't see nearly as many of these kinds of RPGs out there without those tools available, as they really lower the barrier for indie devs. I suppose if they didn't exist someone would've put together a framework for them in Godot or Unity or something.

At the same time, I'm not really sure why the "RPG" genre gets singled out for this. The 2D platformer is even older, for one, and in the non-porn arena the arcade fighter is only hanging on because of its competitive player base.

Just from personal observation, it seems like the Japanese (porn) gaming market is still fairly keen on them, although I feel like there aren't as many straight RPG-maker type RPGs coming out over there. Year or so ago you'd see several a month. I think the novelty of MV is wearing off, and devs are starting to try to do less RPG-like things with them.

It's easier to make and you don't have to know code.
Just need a simple map, story, game direction and art for the scenes. Game.
A lot of these Rpg maker games are the dev's first games so we're are going to see a lot.

This is not the case for every game, tho. For example, I do code some little things for my RPGM games.
I also have seen some pretty good RPGM games out there, wich doesn't give the impression of being a dev's first game.

i feel you brother. i hate rpgm games( no offence). dont get me wrong rpg games are nice but i dont know why porno+rpgm game does not mix well for me.
Could be because of lot of them make he fun stuff hidden behind a lose wall, which goes against the natural tendency of players, especially RPG players.

oof this is awkward. actually, after playing Peasant's Quest my views on rpgm changed completely. i enjoy rpgms quite a bit now XD
i guess it's all about finding the right games for you. at that time, i would only play VNs and naturally rpgm was a completely new thing and had a different pacing. on top of that i think the first rpgm titles i tried were of ICSTOR or NLT(their older games) and i did not like them one bit. games like PQ makes much more sense on rpgm.
and regarding the games where you get scenes after losing...well i don't enjoy them as well, quite possibly because of the reason you stated.

Try Melty's Quest, it is one of the best erotic games I've ever played and an RPG to boot. Even though there is some 'losing' scenes, it is as simple as 'give up' and there is a special mechanic that goes with it, so there is a point. Or just play it straight and unlock everything post-game instantly if I recall correctly.
