I'm making a 2d point and click game. I want to release an "hard" version, with explicit contents, and a soft one, with just kisses etc... My question is: how can I make the soft version "enjoyable"? I mean, why should someone play it ? I know that it is a tricky question, but I hope that someone can help me. How can a point and click be funny and playable without the hard scenes?

If your game is not fun to play without the hentai scenes, it is a NSFW game and a SFW version has no reason to exist.

If you want an enjoyable SFW version, you will have to focus on character development, story telling, etc.

I'm not grumpy, I'm just coded that way.

I'll go further. Like it's a point'n'click game, if it's not fun without the adult content, there's chance that it will not be this fun, and so this interesting, even as NSFW game.

I mean, what kind of things would make you enjoy a point and click game ?

A lot of people on here are asking for more "romance" a game with lots of hand-holding could do well.

If it doesn't have adult content, it doesn't belong here, so do the dirty version and offer the romance as a premium.

I think what they want is a "How-to guide to dating girls"
In this day and age, where touching a boob can land you in jail, today's kids need some instructions.

STEM programs don't do you any favors in the dating department, with their focus on things girls aren't interested in.

In my mind, most games are made of three things: gameplay, story, and aesthetics. In the case of this forum, aesthetics often includes porn. So the simplest answer to your question is if you make a game that has really good gameplay (fun) and/or story (interesting) then the porn is just icing on the cake. Sure, people like icing on cakes, but muffins are also popular. (I'm not here to debate the status of muffins and cake). A lot of the games/VN on here are very reliant on the porn. If you took it out, what's left isn't enough to justify the experience. People seem to be more than willing to overlook bad gameplay and writing if it has nice art and sexy times. So you have to make a really solid experience that doesn't overly rely on porn.

Back in the '90's there were a lot of point-and-click "adventure" games, where you had to solve puzzles etc. to go through the storyline. I thought they were good fun, so it's a valid concept.

An "adult game" (i.e. a game intended for an adult audience) can have nudity or even sex, but it's not the (main) intention to be fappable.
A "porn game" has the sole objective to be fappable.
A lot of games here fall somewhere in between, which often leads to complaints about blue-balling. But I digress....

If you want to make two versions, I could suggest that you approach it like a James Bond movie: there is a plot (e.g. a bad guy who wants to destroy Earth) and there just happen to be one or two pretty girls who he ends up in bed with. The "adult" version could show kissing and maybe some nudity. The "porn" version could show the same scene, but with hardcore porn.

A lot of visual novels (especially from Japan) get SFW releases on Steam and other platforms, with censored sex scenes. Whenever a sex scene would usually be up next, the screen just goes black and the text describes the following scene in a SFW manner in order to be within Steam's guidelines for adult stuff. However, for each and every one of those games, there is always an official patch for the Steam version which is usually easily found via Google, often even through the Steam discussion forum for the respective game.

So you could just create the NSFW version, then modify it to get a second SFW version and release the latter to different gaming platforms. People who want to play it in its NSFW glory can just apply the patch you provide either through the Steam forums, F95Zone or other means (your blog, site etc.).

That might be a solution!

Cool Puzzles. Interesting Story and satisfactory rewards (Romantic Paths that are satisfactory)

Problem is:

- The SFW is probably not worth playing on it's own because the storyline revolves around romance / sex, just without the good parts

- The SFW is not actually SFW.
I mean, I don't brag to my friends about playing a manga style dating simulator and wouldn't like it if my colleagues saw me playing it on my work laptop.
Looking at straight-up porn would be better for my reputation! :D
A game like this on the other hand: would not be something I'd need to hide from anybody.
And, if well-written, it could still have steamy sex scenes. Just not as many as in real porn game.
