Free Fuck Ticket, the other game from this dev. If you haven't played it yet, I recommend to do it. It's a bit darker, more forbidden and sometimes a bit nasty, but you get used too it quickly and the exploration of the theme is pretty nice.
I didn't put these two on a ranking, I was simply stating that Yarimon isn't automatically the better game just because it has an epic main plot that drives some sort of long-term story throughout the game.
People often don't even really know how they feel about certain game design elements. They may say "I liked the story more" but they actually liked the cast more, or that there are more different places to discover, or [...]. For many people saying "the story" is just a way of saying something, it's the next best bet. You can observe this often with movies.. you ask what they liked in the movie, they say "the story", and if you ask them what they liked in particular, they say "idk just the story". Which tells then they probably liked other aspects they can't really name.
In terms of story Yarimon was really thin too. It just delivered the framework to create a coherent world and not just a random sequence of towns, which is cool, but the big difference between the two games isn't the story. It's mainly just that Yarimon has the Pokemon style gameplay with fights and a much bigger world to explore. 90% of the time is not about the main story. You get small chunks here and there and then a big reveal in the end, that's about it. FFT on the other hand does more forbidden things and has a much more diverse cast of women that don't all look the same, and the theme is way darker.
What Yarimon did great is that you'd get to know characters and then meet them again under different circumstances. This has nothing to do with "the story", but it's really giving a lot of characters more depth.
well, since you asked(you didn't but i gonna take this as a chance to praise game, even if you like it too), i liked everything about game: premise, story, music, tempo/pacing, humor, gameplay, thoughtfulness and feeling that "this is all comes together to form something greater, whole". It struck me as outlier, the genuine Game in mid of mediocre hentai slop, i had unfortune to partake in(welp, can't avoid it-if you won't test things, you never find things).
It had understanding of itself in presenting you the way to just disable gameplay difficulty with easy mode, 1 shot move that let you win battles the same speed as some other jrpg's with "fuck it, let's escape every encounter and bruteforce story cause i got sick of grinding" tactic of escape button spam. Also it was humorously done and tied to story itself-with "classic" approach of ugly bustard nobody some day having access to hypnotic app on phone, but in the pokemon type world and with a twist.
Then i got hit with "oya-oya? it's not the same songs from rpgmaker sound repository, nice" and good sense of humor-the confusion or mc,
when his dream come true but instead of him forcing his way in, he was just "what the hell is going on, why SHE try to force sex, why her mother ok with it???", then clear "something odd is going on" but happy-go-lucky attitude "oh well, i have my buddy, my disk shine and i gonna start my adventure today, let's not pay attention to weirdness and claim the greatness hopefully...".
Then the pacing and gameplay kicked in-no one force your hand, you have time to wander around and learn from your mistakes. No one chose rout for you-pick the road and hit it. It's basic, really, but some games don't appreciate peace of mind of gamers enough and shove you the "clock is ticking, you gonna pick up the pace" warning.
Then gameplay-it's like pokemon, but as other people said "everything(or near everything) bad was cut out and we have just good, solid pokemon game, even if you have it in the vacuum, without the rest.
Then the story unfolds before your eyes, letting you observe it's tapestry before you. Did i mention the pacing? the learn past from your dreams, the ability of player to notice things that's unnoticed by mc-like scientist robes, high tech society and so on. And all of it placed at such intervalls, that you won't be overwhelmed with amount at one portion+you get mentally prepared before "grand reveals".
And finally, conclusion-which leave you mouth agape and smash your initial impression "this is your usual hypnosis hentai story with pokemon twist" with "this is your usual hypnosis hentai story with pokemon twist but Greater", subverting expectations and leaving only pleasant experience behind.
This is what defy the yarimon game-"you did expect to find copper, you found gold"
P.S. i forgot to mention that humor stays consistent and good throughout the story. The same humor you got at the prologue, you get from the rest of game. I got mirth out of it more than i expected from the game.
