Short guide for new people to help with the unpacking of RPG maker archives.

Note: this only works for RPG maker XP, VX and VX Ace. NOT for MV!

  1. Download the decrypter at: (courtesy of some guy on reddit)
  2. Download and install the .net 4.0 framework if needed
  3. Run the decrypter.exe file you downloaded in step 1. I usually copy it in the game folder, since it's only 300 kB.
  4. Press "file", then "open archive" and navigate to your game folder and select the archive (.rgss file)
  5. Then press "Tools" and "Extract all files". The extractor will now start extraction. It will create a new folder in the same location as your archive with the name "extract". It will give you a message when it is ready.
  6. Cut the content of the "extract" folder when the extractor is done and paste it in your main game folder. This will most likely include the "graphics" folder. Overwrite where needed.
  7. Rename or remove the archive if you're adding translations. If you don't, then the archive will still have priority and nothing changes. This also saves a lot of disk space.
How to apply a partial translation on a Japanese game:
  1. Extract the RPG maker archive as instructed above. Don't forget to remove the archive after extracting!
  2. Download the partial translation
  3. Copy and overwrite the files in the partial translation
  4. Run game

GAME FILE>WWW>img>pictures usually some of the MV games have the pictures here so if the folder is present you can check it out¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It seems that EnigmaVBUnpacker has file size limitations. If the executable is more 2GB.. throws up an error message.

There are a couple of solutions to this you may try different unpacking tools like: Virtual File System Editor or Virtual Packages Extractor
You may try a newer version of EnigmaVBUnpacker (btw 0.35 is currently the latest)
or you may try this patcher for enigma that allows you to mess with stuff with 4gb

Well be advised that your machine must support at least the unpacking of those files, if your ram is not up to the task it will be impossible either way (I know, as I tried and suffered the freezing software backlash [a.k.a. this app stopped working])

Thank you for the links. Yes, I tried EnigmaVBUnpacker with the 4gb patch first. It still throws up an error.

Not sure how to use the virtual file system editor and package extractor..

As far as system RAM, I have 8 GB+ so I would think that should be sufficient.

My test file executable was The New Life v0.6. It is 2.2GB file.

myself I also don't know how to use virtual file system per se, but package extractor is fairly straight forward. run package extractor, run game, refresh list, check which PID of the game is with the higher memory on task manager and extract desired files an example below i had extracted the audio folder from new life

Edit: Also keep in mind that package extractor works as a single or simple folder extractor, if you try to extract img folder for example you will need to extract each folder one by one, if you try to extract all at once you might get an error or get parcial files only

To be honest I don't know for sure if there is any topic about game translations of rpg maker games, might be never truly searched myself. But as far as I know you need to decompile the files with the softwares found here to "translate" the game to another language.
