The plot pretty much has the town being / having a genus loci (literally, "spirit of a place"), likely awoken by all the festivals with the early settlers coming together specifically for survival, to remember escaping from persecution, and to overcome the differences that would've torn them apart counting as large scale rituals.Yeah, that was too convenient of a setup which seemed orchestrated by the villagers not wanting Lily to leave the village and to keep her closed off from the outside world for whatever nefarious purpose that the Grandma and the rest of the Grimwood villagers have in store for her.
At least according to our landlady, anyways.
Genus loci wouldn't need any conspiracy, and/or could actually be managing it.
The town itself has been explicitly cited as paring away Lily's inhibitions and modifying her thought patterns from habitually prudish to slutty.
