V 0.2 with a patreon already listed.
I understand the apprehension, but I've been writing this for the majority of this year. I have no intention of stopping until this thing's completed, monetary support or not, it's solely there for those that feel this is worth putting money towards.

Congrats! LewdLemniscate Apply for game dev tag by opening a ticket

Thank you much.
I don't think you do. F95 is not notorious for its ability to keep people up to date on projects. It's rather common for something to go months without any updates, and that's if people catch them. Itchio is far better for that.

But that's all just up in the air and could be up to one's opinion. What isn't is that a 5$ monthly Patreon tier only offers " mostly monthly status updates " .

5$ for....status updates. Status. updates. And for 10$ a month, you get....discord access.

That's fucking weird as hell, my guy. Kudos for getting 120k words out before launching officially, but that's still a pretty horrid monetization setup. It's weird, it's teetering between poorly thought out and outright greedy, and overall, entirely unnecessary. A discord with maybe 10 people is not worth 10 bucks a month. It's just not thought out. It's all well and good to say people can support if they want, but if that's the case, why is the entry level 5$ a month? Why not 1? Why not 2? Why five when they get what is tantamount to nothing at all. That's not how you get people to kindly show support for something new and untested.

Including for posterity's sake.

Edit: This game apparently does have an itchio page that is not linked on its Patreon or here. Coincidentally, it also has the $name issue on it. This does make my initial comment partially incorrect, warranting tweaking. It does, however, add another point of showing how rushed out the door this feels. The silly " where you play as $name " blunder mixed with not linking anything but your PAID platform is just a bit rough. Well, one of them is rough. The other could be argued to be intentionally scummy.

This game has only been tested on a Windows system, but there's no conceivable reason this shouldn't run on any computer capable of opening an HTML file.
There in fact is. Your HTML file references voidmap.png but no such file exists which results in a broken link right when you start a new game.
There is instead a voidmap.PNG which on WIndows systems with case insensitive filesystems gets loaded, but not on any other OS.
A small and easily fixed issue ofc but still.

Because not everyone is out to make money and try to work on this stuff full time. If he were, then you would have some valid points, but it is so obvious that he isn't. He said he's going to work on this no matter what, so this is just a way for people to give him some money if they like his work. Think of it like a tip jar.

And look, the release post was made with no donation tier required.

Should it have been Kofi or something else? Maybe, but patreon is the more popular/widely known option. Patreon is just a tool, and not everyone uses it the same way and he's being completely upfront with what you get. There is no problem here.

While most games are uploaded by the upload team and/or whenever someone provides the files, there are some games (like this one) that the devs handle themselves. So he'll just release updates here when he updates patreon/itch... so there's no inherent downside if someone were to primarily use f95 for releases as long as they do it themselves. Again f95 is just a tool and in this instance it is being used in a different way from the majority of other instances. There is no problem here.

And Jesus, give the $name thing a rest. It's obviously a joke (over)done on purpose, the text is different between here and itch, and its obviously not something copied out of the game. He's just saying you can name your character whatever you want.

What are you people going on about? To me "$name" just read as a mild joke, not a "silly blunder".

Also, this game is free, patreon is for donations. Why is this scummy? You wanted a paywall inside the game for it to not be scummy? That's what you're asking for when you demand more perks for patrons. Why can't you just play and decide if it's something you'd like to donate for?

I played for bit and the writing is good. I was surprised by the fantasy races in this context, not my thing, but I'll it a shot. I'm all in for the eldrich stuff, however! So far it's really compelling. Hoping for a big hairy gay romance, but it's highly unlikely:LOL:. Anyway, in this type of game appearance really won't make a character interesting enough, so I'll go for the most compelling character story-wise.

Thank you for the criticism, and the amusement at the $name. It was a purposeful addition to the description of the game to show humor. The actual default name is 'Composition Notebook', and I intend to release every build of this for free to the public on my Patreon as well as here. It being on itch.io is partially to test the waters in different environments. I stand by my decision to add the Patreon, and the lack of epic support perks is because I'm not making this solely for the money. If someone wants to support me, they can support me. If not, then it doesn't really matter, since I'll be releasing the builds for free anyways as I finish them.

Thank you for finding this! That should be easy enough to iron out.

I love that this has descended into bickering almost immediately. More on topic, any plans for any sort of pictures / visual aids? Haven't downloaded and booted up the game because the previews are just text. Don't care if its Ai, hand drawn, stolen from the web, etc. I just like pictures...

There are some pictures within (currently three total), but I've used them quite sparingly, and never to represent characters. I'll likely add more as I keep writing, but still pretty sparingly.

It's simply cuz Patreon allow devs to monetise this way.
And who don't want money? Whether he can successfully gain financial support or not is his problem.
As long as there's no pay-walled contents, I don't see a problem. No need to be so hostile.
But you made a great point, this does not generate good will for an unknown project form an unknown dev.

But everyone should keep in mind, whether the dev "says" He's gonna finish it or not, doesn't matter.
There's no way you can hold him accountable to his words.
Proceed with caution of your own money.

My man, first impressions are everything and you left a very bad one on everyone.

With the dollar gaining in strength, the amount of third world grifts is skyrocketing. It's a little frustrating, considering most of these patreons are either HS2 models, renpy, DAZ slop, AI slop, or simply stuff made with no care, as long as the creator gets a dollar or two, so he can live another 3 to 6 months off of them.

Good luck to the dev, but that's all you'll get from me.
