Seeking A game with Progressive Monsters/Enemies

Hi. I'm looking for a game where the monsters/enemies you fight remember the amount of times they have defeated you and iterate on their actions and dialog according to the amount. Probably a game with a lot of bad statuses and or corruption.

Japanese games are definitely preferred.

Shrift (and probably Shrift 2) are probably what you're looking for. I've played Shrift for a while, but did not finish it. The combat is nice, but the hub sections are frustrating at best.
