the share is probs a bastardization resulting from social media having "share" buttons, so it's thanking for the act of pressing that button, eventually evolving into people using it to thank for anything made available online.
this has me surprised.
"share" was a term in p2p long before social media. like uploaders are sharing files in ed2k network, for example.

share is an old verb and sharing being used in computer terms traces all the way back to the 60s/70s according to google ngram.
thanking for sharing [thing/news/stories] also already existed as something non-tech people did. incorrectly starting to use "share" as a noun there instead of a gerund (and in relation to it, calling the shared thing a share) had to start somewhere, though, and that i see getting attributed to social media.

Lerd0 frequently has a post on first page. Sometimes, just thanks, sometimes with a meme. But that's not all he does. He isn't systematic about it. He posts in other places. He contributes to the site as uploader and is a valuable(?) member of the community. He doesn't give the impression that he is farming likes. He really just wants to thank the share or post a meme that came to his mind at that moment. You can tell because most of his first page memes are not edited in later.

Now let's talk about rKnight. This guy probably uses a f95zone tracker or religiously refreshes latest updates to spot new game threads. Then he will quickly drop a "thanks for share" post to reserve his spot at the top of the first page. He then later goes back and edits his posts with a meme. The meme format is very predictable and forced. He will quote something in the OP and make a "joke" about it. You can see that almost all his posts are edited.

And you pretty much NEVER see this guy post anywhere else. Not only is he farming likes, we can assume that he is also conscious about his likes per post ratio.

I mean, he ain't hurting anyone, so it's no big deal at the end of the day. Caring about internet points to this degree is weird, but if it makes him happy, good for him. But the "tradition" OP is talking about is probably this like farming behavior by rKnight. Others occasionally post their memes when inspiration hits them, but only one person is a constant.

Interestingly enough, he's blocked me from his profile and doesn't respond to me in any way for some reason, Ah well, no skin off my nose.

rKnight sometimes making posts on member profiles and randomly liking posts..I don't know how it works, if there is some kind of system to it. However, but its true that you probably won't find any posts other than memes in game threads.

I trust that he's a valuable member of the community because I know he's a degenerate like me. I know it in my heart. :KappaPride:

I just post the same memes everywhere and hope they hit.

Like this one. You like? Is good, yes?

Like ripping a fart in a crowded room then running out and closing the door behind me. It's fun.
