When trying to play the update of a HTML game the other day I noticed all my previous savegames were gone. I first figured it may have to do with changes in the game (like sometimes happens in Ren'Py) but after that I checked two others and the savegames are gone there as well. Does anyone know what could have caused that, and maybe if there is any way to restore them? I use Microsoft Edge btw.

NateGrey - Did you clear cookies by any chance on your IE browser? Did you check local storage?

Usually, I back up my HTML save games by creating a separate copy and exporting/transporting it to a USB as a backup measure.

I didn't actively clear cookies as far as I know, but maybe it happened as a side effect of an update or through my antivirus. What exactly do you mean by local storage?

At least, lesson learned, I will keep extra saves in the future!

some other possible causes:
- you were low on drive space, used the browser, and it generously decided to get rid of some less used history/cookies/local storage/extensions to make room, as most modern browsers seem programmed to do so without asking for your opinion first
- if more than just some saves is missing, a browser update might've caused it (either intentionally or some issue/corruption occured during the update)
- if you've never had this problem before and it'll start happening regularly now, an update corrupting your browser installation might still be the cause

local storage?

tl;dr, a younger alternative to cookies for storing more data in the browser than cookies permit for, without an expiration date.

you can browse local storage with dev tools\application. f12 to open.
