Amatsutsumi is the best of the 5 VN's I read by Purple Software. The premise is interesting; It explores great themes, and stirs up strong feelings; It's something you can read casually or seriously; It's not filled with affectation (like Aoi Tori), and the ending left a very strong positive impression. If you want a recommendation on what Purple Software VN you should read first, Amatsutsumi is the clear winner.
Positive:
- Very nice and diverse cast - Specifically Mana as an "ice queen" character, and Hotaru as a good example of light sarcasm done right. You won't be reading this just for the characters but they are pretty good, protagonist included.
- "All" kinds of themes to think about - And if you don't want to it's fine, because they give you the moral of the story at the end, and the build-up to that point was great.
- Good Nakige - It takes a long time for the "good stuff" to arrive, but when it does, it reaches top tier. Great mix of tragedy, and mystery.
- Interesting premise/setting - Absolute control through words allows for unique scenes, and the way it's used (or not used) in the story, can tell you how the protagonist's moral compass is evolving. It's a clever concept that is left ambiguous, and leaving the supernatural to the reader's interpretation works for me.
- Good OST, and voice acting - Gonna mention Hotaru again, her V.A is excellent. The OST was taken down from YouTube, so you can't check it.
Neutral:
- H-scenes - It's the usual Purple Software, they are serviceable at best, don't read Amatsutsumi for the 18+. The reason why I even brought them up here, is because the protagonist is close to amoral (at first), and sleeps with the heroines at "odd junctions" (let's go with that), so it could be interesting on difference factor alone.
Negative:
- Just a few things: Comedy and tropes are on the weaker side; Amatsutsumi takes a LONG time to get really good; And the route quality is uneven (Mana and Hotaru are far above the other 2).
Score: Amatsutsumi is an 8/10, a great VN, and it's very close to top tier. Unfortunately, the first 2 routes are not "up to snuff", but if you are patient, the reward will come, and the second half of the title is very impressive. If you ask me, that's more than enough reason to read this. Highly recommended, don't dismiss it early on it gets better.
