Another AI game thread - but with a bit of a difference. Opinions welcome.

I know I know - not another "if I make a game with AI images will anyone play it let alone subscribe to it" thread.

In this case, not quite. Here is my question and of course I welcome opinions. I would not be making this thread if I did not want to hear from you.

I have been working on a Ren'py game for several years. Yes I am slow but I was never in any hurry and real life has interfered on multiple occasions. Also, as my python skills have improved, I have revisited many parts of my code and reworked it or added new features. I am a 1 man band so all writing, coding and artwork is done by yours truly. I refer to myself as a semi talented button mashing hack with regards to Daz Studio. Others tell me I am too modest and my renders are pretty decent.

The game I am making is a spy-based game but not a Mission Impossible/James Bond type ie rubber masks and helicopters in train tunnels. I hope to have it closer to real life, dark gritty and with real world (well the MC's real world) consequences based on your decisions. Just minus a lot of the staking something out for a month before any activity. It is a game after all and hopefully enjoyable to play.

Okay - enough background, on to the question. Although I quite enjoy rendering in Daz Studio, I have always preferred the anime/manga art style and would love to make my game in that style. Here is what I am thinking, I can render anything I need in Daz Studio, then use that in image to image to generate the game render using whichever art style I like. This alleviates a lot of the weird issues AI games have with dodgy anatomy such as too many fingers or objects held incorrectly as they will use my reference renders as input.

So the million $ question is, would you play a game where AI has been used to produce an art style and enhance images based on render input. Or would the AI tag (I would be honest and include that tag even though the artwork is based off my own renders) put you off without trying it.

Over to you - fire away.

SDL.

I will be honest, I prefer 100000000 times AI stuff than 3D models like the ones from Daz studio. I don't get why people can fap to something that gives me uncanny valley vibes. Also take into consideration one important thing: most of the people that play porn games don't give a fuck about morality or anything else, they just want a good wank. You can be the biggest asshole in the world and but if people find it appealing, they would go for it.

Show us the results of your conversion if you wamt feedback. Does it stay consistent?

There are a some "muh artists" anti-AI people, but most people just don't like the lack of consistency and flow to the images, especially in a VN format.

Bro... I'm no fan of Daz either but you're trying to talk uncanny valley about Daz when you say you prefer AI??? Don't know what world you're living in. I rather look at the plastic barbie dolls that are Daz models than a 6-7 fingered, short-legged, long-torsoed, cross-eyed, three-armed, face-changing, triple-vagged, impossibly-clothed abomination that AI creates. If you can perform the mental gymnastics required to fap to a 7 fingered girl, I really don't see why the uncanny valley from Daz is an issue.

My first question would be, if you're planning on using AI over 3D for an anime artstyle, why not use Koikatsu? I would think it would produce better results considering the base the AI would have to work with is infinitely closer to the artsyle you would be going for.

I mean AI is getting a lot better. I will not say that is perfect and if I am honest an artist drawing will always do a better job but yeah I totally prefer that to those DAZ 3d. Don't get me wrong, I am against DAZ models only those are super uncanny for me, other 3d models like Koikatsu are totally fine, or even more cartoony stuff like ripping of Overwatch models. It is a pick-your-poison kinda problem, do you prefer the AI inconsistencies or something that looks super uncanny? For me, I chose the AI.

Do you need AI for this? I mean, there are shaders for everything: outlines, sharpness, procedural wrinkles on a skin...

I havent seen any AI game so far that looked nice for me. Seems like AI always breaks geometry in some way.
But who knows, maybe yours is different.

Here is a quick comparison - not exactly the style I am heading for but will show what I mean:

I like the artstyle, but seriously, AI has deformed a good model. Dont you notice it?
- the elbow has some problem with stretched skin
- One eye is bigger than another
- the earring looks like some weird mess
- Fingers seem deformed and who bends index finger like that?

I'd prefer the original 3D model 100%. For me preserving geometry is more important than adding artstyle.

The question is can you recreate this character in different poses and situations while keeping the same outfit and appearance? That's always the big hurdle when using AI art in something more than pinups.
I can normally get the character to remain consistent, as well as the outfit due to the reference image. But only time will tell how it will go if I go down this path.
