I know the answer may be obvious because most DAZ models are attractive but I find that when I do make a character and add hair, makeup, etc they end up looking uncanny valley and a bit off and ugly? And then when I'm playing a VN I'm often stunned about how good the characters look in that game. Maybe I am just being overly critical of what I am making and when I play AVNs I'm not in that mindset but I am just wondering whenever you start creating a character are there any sort of guide like thinking you are following, what you're aiming for etc. I think I especially struggle with what hairstyle

Welcome to being a dev. Where you over analyze and question everything you ever do. Half the challenge of being a dev is knowing when to leave good enough alone. Characters aren't one of those things, though.

While there is such thing as traditional 'attractiveness', much of it is subjective to each individual. Stuff like sharp jawlines, crescent eyes, smiles, etc. are all things people find attractive. But each person has slight nuances that really attract someone to them. What's that for you? What do you find especially attractive in a woman? Start there. Make a woman you find attractive first, because you're making these characters for you first. Which is something I think is lost on newer developers - and why we end up with so many abandoned games.

Beauty is totally subjective. What some people love, others might hate. What really makes a character beautiful, aside from looks, is their personality… A perfect example is the game Light of My Life. Its two female leads are honestly the ugliest I've seen in ages… but you still end up loving them. Better to focus on writing than chasing the perfect body.

The "wise" old gooners at /aco/vweg have the right of it when they collectively consider all daz characters as just variations of the prototypical Gobbo.

Don't fight it, lean into it. Chasing visual perfection is a subjective trap and will only hold you back from progress, and increase your fear of showing your work to other people. The realest feedback you will even get is genuine reactions from people without a stake in the outcome or a reason to care about your fee-fee feelings.
