Aseprite or similar program for pixel art

I have plans that require pixel art, and Aseprite looks the easiest to understand. Problem being, Aseprite's free trial doesn't let you save any projects, pretty much making it useless.
I'm aware of the Steam sale going where it's marked down to $13.99, but that's still too rich for my blood.

Does anyone know where I can find the full program or something similar?

It's worth mentioning that the full version of Aseprite is free if you compile it yourself.

On Windows it's difficult but not impossible to do.
On Linux it's as simple as one command.
