So moving forward only VS code will be supported, interestingly enough the new betas for ren'py feature official VS code support.

Hmm. My extent of Atom use/knowledge is limited to Ren'py programming--is there any reason why I can't continue to use the current version even after it's archived?

none whatsoever, that said you might wanna try vs code,It's pretty good and all the extensions make it even better. things like color picker that you usually need another app are doable inside vs code

Is it buggy? Did it stop working? If not, what's the problem? Good software don't need regular updates.

I am using Visual Code with a RenPy plugin, and it works decently. I have never used Atom, but there are a lot of different text editors you can use if you dislike VS Code, like Sublime.

At least, Sublime used to work great when I used it. Though I must admit it's some time ago when I last used it.

Jeez, way to kill the messenger. Don't bash the guy (or gal) for passing along the news.

No, I was trying to make a point. I'm still using a version of Photoshop from 2011 (back when you could just buy a copy and keep it). I use it for everything. It hasn't been updated once because it never needed it. Heck, I still pull out Paint shop pro (from 1998) once in a while when I need to open some weird archaic file format. Good software never dies.

Oh sorry, never mind. I forgot Atom was based on HTML and Javascript and I shouldn't try to apply traditional software principles to it or its development. I apologize. (Nothing against Atom, but Photoshop may not be an apt comparison in this case.)

Thanks! This helped me, I'm starting python and Ren'Py. Had doubts about Atom, deleted it with confidence. specially after realizing it takes 900MB ish in local folder.

Atom was just a worse version of Sublime Text Editor with a really mind numbingly stupid backend behind it.
The only use is it was free and had some built in integration with renpy(if you used that version) while you had a wide plugin ecosystem similar to Sublime.

The Renpy version was not the current version, so it was already archived.
The only thing it really affects is if the Plugin Manager completely shuts down.
