Hey all,
Just wanted to post a couple images to show some of the progress I've made toward the next release and answer some questions. I appreciate the encouraging comments I have received both here and in my inbox, so a big thank you for those! Ultimately I'm making this game for myself and just sharing it with the world, and that motivation is more than enough to keep me going regardless.
Anyway, the next release (0.02) handles a lot of the basic mechanics of the game (inventory, status, quests, map navigation), and fortunately all of the coding and art is in place now for those systems. The game is really shaping up into its standard form at this point, and I've also been updating the gui (fixing the menu options, adding cover art for the main menu, etc.). So that I don't delay the next release for too much longer, there will be less story progress in this next update then there will be in updates following this one. Specifically, the next update will include the first questline and access to Korra's first available job (and job outfit). It will also introduce another familiar face from the franchise plus two new characters (a food vendor and an original female character that the player will eventually been able to train alongside Korra).
Work remaining: Drawing two more sprites, drawing the cg scene for the first quest, and scripting out the first quest. Hopefully within the next week or so I will have all of that completed and be able to announce the next update's release. In the meantime, the attached images are a preview of the status screen and the map screen. You'll notice Korra has a number of stats for the player to work with. I'll mention now that the reputation and loyalty stats are only applicable to Korra and not the other trainable characters available later on.
Anyway, on to questions/comments I wish to respond to:
@IAmTerror - Four Elements looks interesting, so thanks for pointing it out to me. At some point I'll try it just to see what it's like, but for now I'm going to avoid doing that so that it doesn't subconsciously influence what I do with my game. I don't view them as being in competition with my game (especially since my game is free, so what would be the point in competing?) But as you said, hopefully I do things a bit differently and both games can be enjoyable for fans of the series.
@anomynus - Honestly I never encountered the bug you speak of, but I think you're referring to the doll system Akabur used in Princess Trainer, where the face was a separate image from the body. I'm not doing it that way specifically because of bugs like this. Each character expression is its own sprite image, so the worst bug you might get is a different expression than intended, rather than what you describe. As for your other concerns, yes, there will doubtless be some grinding involved, because to an extent I like that in the games I am comparing this to, but I don't intend it to be an obscene amount (I trust people to tell me if it goes that direction so I can correct it). I have no intent to switch artists for the cg/sprites which I myself am doing. Things like background/item images are probably the only thing on the table that I will consider hiring out. Also, I intend every single quest to have at least one cg scene as part of the questline, so the only time you will see chibi sprites is on the map screen where I use them to show what tasks/jobs Korra and the other girls will be doing.
@All those who thought this was something other than ATLA/Korra - Sorry! I was choosing a name that I thought referred well enough to this setting without stating it explicitly. Hopefully all of your Bender Bending Rodriguez/Gender Bending/Futurama Bender game ideas are eventually realized!
@dasLeif666 - Ironic isn't it? Except remember from the show, that Korra can still airbend? Yeah, that. Also the other trainable girls (three planned, including Korra, and a fourth one that I'm thinking won't be added until New Game+) are benders who, depending on player choices, may or may not lose their bending abilities as well. But that's all future content, so let's wait on that discussion.
@gtz-god - send me a pm and we'll talk.
@XJ347 - I too, prefer more story than I've seen in most games, even the ones I like. The premise is definitely a corruption-theme, and unlike either of the games I've mentioned in comparison, I DO intend there to be multiple endings to the main storyline, so yes, choices matter.
@TheKaizer - Unfortunately, I'm not an expert on MEGA, so I'm not sure why you received that error (it still works fine for me). I recommend trying one of the other link choices or waiting for 0.02 and trying again with the new link. Hopefully this is easy for you to resolve. If anyone else is having trouble with this same problem, let me know and I'll look into it more deeply.
