Try holding shift while starting the game to get to the config screen, then set the gamepad option to disabled. Quit and restart the game without holding shift this time. see if it starts up for you.

seems to be no way to reduce stress other than -1 from a shower everyday. so you build stress in the first week where you can't do anything and by the time you get choices with the family you can't interact with them because your stress is too high
