I'm playing around with the dforce hair stuff myself, it has the potential to be very useful. Some hair scalps are better than others. Also if you don't run the simulation on all the hair surfaces sometimes you can get better results. If it can make longer hair more useful it'll be a godsend.
From what I can tell, while the convergence is about how close different passes of a pixel have to get to be considered done, quality is the quality threshold of each of those passes. So it does of have an impact, but it's an extra layer of quality beyond getting rid of grain. So if grain is the problem someone is having high image quality it only compounding their issue (At least that's what I take from what I've read about it).

That's what I'm using. You grab the same thing? I've been going by its recommendations, including using a separate preset for the scalp, and the results can be pretty fantastic. Especially the wet hair stuff - no more trying to find a similar-ish premade wet hair for a character. XD
